The March 2022 Jobs Report: What is the Current U.S. Employment Situation?

The U.S. Department of Labor March jobs report for 2022 showed positive trends in U.S. jobs data and exceeded expectations once again. The BLS report includes data on employment, unemployment, industries hiring in 2022, wages, and other metrics that shed light on the U.S. employment situation.

Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 431,000 in March and the unemployment rate decreased to 3.6%. Of note, the unemployment rate for adult women declined to 3.3%.

U.S. jobs data surrounding the pandemic also looked promising:

  • 10% of employed persons reported teleworking because of COVID-19, down from 13% in February 2022.
  • The number of persons stating they had been unable to work or worked fewer hours because their employer closed or lost business due to COVID-19 decreased significantly month-over-month from 4.2 million to 2.5 million.
