Job Summary
Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Utility Line Locator to support safe excavation and construction activities by accurately identifying and marking underground utility infrastructure. This role is critical in preventing damage to electrical, telecommunications, gas, water, and sewer systems while ensuring compliance with industry regulations and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities
Utility Locating & Marking
- Perform precise locating and marking of underground utilities including electric, gas, water, sewer, and telecommunications systems.
- Utilize electromagnetic locating equipment, ground-penetrating radar (GPR), and other detection technologies to identify subsurface infrastructure.
- Mark utilities in accordance with APWA color codes and project specifications.
- Verify accuracy of locates through visual inspection, records review, and field validation.
Field Operations
- Conduct work in a variety of environments including construction sites, roadways, easements, and residential/commercial properties.
- Read and interpret utility maps, as-built drawings, GIS data, and engineering plans to support accurate locating.
- Perform test holes (potholing) using hand tools or vacuum excavation when required.
- Assist with minor excavation activities and operate light equipment such as mini excavators, vacuum trucks, or forklifts when necessary.
Safety & Compliance
- Adhere to all OSHA, state, and company safety regulations, including proper PPE usage and job site hazard assessments.
- Support damage prevention initiatives and comply with 811 / One Call requirements.
- Identify and mitigate potential safety risks associated with underground utilities.
- Maintain a strong safety-first mindset in all field activities.
Documentation & Reporting
- Accurately document locate results, discrepancies, and field conditions using digital tools and reporting systems.
- Complete daily logs, tickets, and reports in a timely manner.
- Communicate any conflicts between field conditions and utility records to supervisors and project teams.
Collaboration & Communication
- Coordinate with construction crews, engineers, project managers, and utility owners to ensure accurate and timely locating services.
- Provide on-site guidance to excavation crews regarding safe digging practices.
- Represent the company professionally when interacting with clients, municipalities, and the public.
Qualifications & Requirements
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 1–3+ years of experience in utility locating, construction, field services, or related industry (or willingness to train the right candidate).
- Working knowledge of underground utility systems and locating techniques.
- Ability to read and interpret maps, blueprints, and utility records.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and terrain.
- Physical ability to walk long distances, lift up to 75 lbs, and perform manual labor as needed.
Preferred
- Experience with electromagnetic locators, GPR, and GIS-based mapping systems.
- Certification in utility locating (e.g., NULCA, state-specific certifications).
- Knowledge of 811 ticket systems and damage prevention processes.
- Experience operating vacuum excavation equipment or light construction machinery.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
- Familiarity with electrical distribution, telecom, or gas systems.
