Job Description

Position Overview

We are seeking a skilled and safety-focused person to support Counterpoise grounding installations for high-voltage transmission structures. This role is critical in ensuring the integrity, safety, and reliability of transmission systems by installing and testing grounding (counterpoise) systems in accordance with utility standards and regulatory requirements.

The ideal candidate has hands-on experience in outdoor construction environments, understands electrical grounding principles, and is comfortable working in physically demanding and travel-intensive conditions.

Key Responsibilities

Grounding Installation & Construction

  • Install grounding systems (counterpoise) for transmission structures, including driving 10-foot ground rods and installing bare copper conductors.
  • Excavate trenches and placement paths for grounding systems using mini excavators and hand tools.
  • Ensure proper bonding and connections between grounding components and tower structures.
  • Read and interpret construction drawings, grounding layouts, and utility specifications to ensure accurate installation.

Testing & Quality Assurance

  • Perform ground resistance testing on installed systems using appropriate testing equipment (e.g., fall-of-potential testing).
  • Verify grounding systems meet utility standards, NESC requirements, and project specifications.
  • Document test results and installation details for reporting and compliance purposes.
  • Identify and troubleshoot grounding deficiencies or installation issues.

Equipment Operation

  • Safely operate mini excavators, trenchers, and other construction equipment required for installation.
  • Perform basic equipment inspections and maintenance checks prior to operation.
  • Utilize hand tools and specialized equipment for grounding installation and testing.

Safety & Compliance

  • Strictly adhere to all OSHA, company, and client safety standards.
  • Participate in daily job briefings, hazard analyses (JHAs), and safety meetings.
  • Maintain awareness of environmental and site-specific risks, especially when working near energized facilities.
  • Ensure proper use of PPE and safe work practices at all times.

Field Operations & Teamwork

  • Work as part of a two-person field crew, maintaining strong communication and coordination.
  • Travel extensively to job sites across Georgia (and potentially surrounding regions), including overnight stays as required.
  • Navigate and work in remote locations, uneven terrain, and varying weather conditions.
  • Support additional field construction activities as needed on transmission or distribution projects.

Requirements

  • Proven experience working in outdoor construction or utility environments.
  • Fundamental understanding of electrical grounding principles and systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and technical specifications.
  • Experience operating mini excavators or similar construction equipment.
  • Physical ability to lift, carry, and maneuver up to 80 lbs regularly.
  • Comfortable working in all weather conditions and on uneven terrain.
  • Willingness to travel extensively and stay overnight near job sites.
  • Strong attention to detail with a commitment to quality and safety.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work within a team-oriented environment.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience with transmission tower grounding or counterpoise installation.
  • Background in electric utility transmission and/or distribution line work.
  • Familiarity with NESC (National Electrical Safety Code) and grounding standards.
  • Experience performing ground resistance testing and interpreting results.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
  • CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Equipment operation certifications (excavation or heavy equipment).
  • Previous experience working on utility right-of-way (ROW) projects.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Field-based role requiring extensive travel and outdoor work.
  • Exposure to heat, cold, rain, and rugged terrain.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, and equipment operation.
  • Work near active construction zones and energized electrical infrastructure.
