Position Summary:
SUNY Upstate is seeking highly experienced Registered Nurses (RNs) to support the
Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) on a temporary nightshift assignment. This role requires clinicians with strong critical-care skills and extensive experience caring for critically ill pediatric patients in a high-acuity trauma setting. Candidates must be able to function independently with minimal orientation and supervision. This is a temporary assignment from March 2026-July 2026
Shift & Schedule:
- Shift: Night shift
- Schedule Requirements:
o Every other weekend
o Some holidays
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide comprehensive, high-quality nursing care to critically ill pediatric patients in the PICU
- Perform thorough and ongoing nursing assessments in a high-acuity critical care environment
- Manage complex patient care needs, including monitoring, interventions, and response to changes in patient condition
- Collaborate closely with physicians, advanced practice providers, and interdisciplinary care teams
- Deliver care in accordance with evidence-based practices, hospital policies, and patient safety standards
- Accurately document patient care, assessments, and interventions in the EPIC Electronic Medical Record system
- Respond effectively to emergency and trauma situations involving pediatric patients
- Maintain a safe, therapeutic environment for patients and families
Required Qualifications:
- Current New York State Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing
- BLS certification (must be current and able to be recertified)
- Minimum 3 years of recent PICU experience (within the past 2 years) in an acute care hospital of similar size and acuity
- Experience in a Level I or Level II trauma center
- Demonstrated ability to perform the majority of critical care nursing skills with minimal supervision
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and critical thinking skills
- Legal authorization to work in the United States
- Successful completion of preemployment health clearance
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience using EPIC Electronic Medical Records
- Prior travel experience in hospitals of equal or greater size and acuity (required for traveler consideration)
Compliance & Screening Requirements:
- Must not have had a professional license or certification suspended or under investigation
- Must not have been named as a defendant in a professional liability claim
- All candidates are subject to drug screening and criminal background checks in accordance with contractual and institutional requirements
