This role offers the opportunity to help shape and grow a small animal internal medicine service within a well-equipped, expanding specialty hospital.
Position Overview
We are seeking a Board-Certified or Residency-Trained Small Animal Internal Medicine Specialist (DACVIM-SAIM) to provide advanced diagnostic and therapeutic services.
You will manage referred cases from regional primary care veterinarians and provide consultations for in-house emergency and specialty patients. This position is ideal for a specialist who values collaboration, clinical autonomy, and long-term service development.
Key Responsibilities
Diagnose and manage complex small animal internal medicine cases
Manage chronic and multi-system disease processes
Perform and interpret abdominal and thoracic ultrasound
Perform upper and lower GI endoscopy, rhinoscopy, and minimally invasive procedures
Perform ultrasound-guided aspirates and sampling techniques
Develop comprehensive, evidence-based diagnostic and treatment plans
Provide internal medicine consultations for emergency and specialty cases
Collaborate with surgery, anesthesia, and critical care teams
Utilize advanced diagnostics including:
CT
Fluoroscopy
Digital radiography
Fully equipped in-house laboratory
Communicate clearly and compassionately with clients
Maintain detailed, accurate medical records
Professional Contributions
Participate in daily case rounds and multidisciplinary discussions
Mentor veterinary technicians and support staff
Foster strong relationships with referring veterinarians
Contribute to the strategic growth of the internal medicine service
Engage in continuing education and specialty advancement
Support a culture of accountability, professionalism, and kindness
Qualifications
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or equivalent)
Board-Certified (DACVIM-SAIM) or Residency-Trained in Small Animal Internal Medicine
Active California veterinary license (or eligibility to obtain)
Minimum 1 year specialty practice experience preferred
Advanced proficiency in abdominal ultrasound and endoscopic procedures
Commitment to high-quality, evidence-based, patient-centered medicine
Strong communication and collaborative skills
Schedule & Call Structure
Primarily daytime specialty schedule
After-hours ultrasound and endoscopy call-ins compensated separately
No negative accrual production model
Flexible scheduling discussions available
Compensation & Benefits
Base salary: $200,000 – $300,000+ annually
Production compensation paid in addition to base
