Data Scientist, Entry Level
We are seeking an Data Scientist to join our data infrastructure team and contribute to our competitive advantage through advanced analytics and machine learning. In this foundational role, you will work closely with senior team members to transform raw telemetry, sensor data, and operational information into actionable insights that fuel our Applied Technologies initiatives and support real-time decision-making for our racing teams.
Key Responsibilities
Data Analysis & Modeling
- Develop and implement machine learning models to analyze operational and time series data
- Create predictive models for vehicle performance optimization, race strategy, and operational efficiency
- Perform statistical analysis and data mining on large-scale datasets
- Build automated reporting systems and dashboards to communicate insights to racing teams
Data Processing & Pipeline Development
- Support the development of data processing pipelines for real-time and batch analytics workloads
- Assist in data validation, cleaning, and transformation processes to ensure data quality
- Collaborate on ETL/ELT pipeline development using modern data processing frameworks
- Help maintain data governance standards and documentation
Analytics & Visualization
- Create interactive dashboards and visualizations to present complex data insights to technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Develop time-series analysis for performance trends, vehicle dynamics, and operational metrics
- Support race weekend analytics with real-time data processing and visualization
- Generate analytical reports for Technical Director, Director of Competition, and race team personnel
Collaboration & Learning
- Work closely with DevOps engineers, senior data scientists, and race teams
- Participate in cross-functional projects with IT, Engineering, and Racing Operations teams
- Contribute to the evaluation and integration of new analytical tools and technologies
Required Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Data Science, Machine Learning, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics, or related quantitative field
- Strong academic project portfolio demonstrating practical application of data science techniques
- Previous work experience (any industry) showing reliability, teamwork, and professional communication skills
- Demonstrated experience with large dataset analysis and processing (academic or personal projects)
Technical Expertise
Computer Skills & Languages
- Python: Proficiency in Python > 3.10 for data analysis, machine learning, and web application development
- SQL: Strong SQL skills for database querying, data extraction, and analysis
- CSS: Basic CSS knowledge for dashboard styling and web interface customization
Infrastructure & Tools
- Version Control: Experience with GitHub for code management and collaboration
- Cloud Platforms: Familiarity with Amazon Web Services (AWS) or equivalent cloud platforms
- Containerization: Basic understanding of Docker, Docker-Compose, and Docker Desktop for development environments
- APIs: General API usage experience for data integration and external service connectivity
- Databases: Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL and TimescaleDB for time-series data management
Python Packages & Libraries
- Data Manipulation: Proficiency in Pandas and NumPy for data analysis and processing
- Visualization: Experience with Plotly for interactive visualizations and Dash for web application development
- Web Requests: Familiarity with requests library for API interactions and data collection
- Machine Learning: Hands-on experience with Scikit-Learn for traditional ML algorithms
- Time Series: Experience with Prophet for forecasting and time series analysis
- Deep Learning: Basic familiarity with PyTorch for neural network development (preferred)
Analytical & Problem-Solving Skills
- Experience with supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques
- Understanding of time series analysis and forecasting methods
- Ability to design experiments and A/B tests to validate hypotheses
- Strong mathematical foundation in linear algebra, calculus, and statistics
- Experience processing and analyzing large datasets (200+ GB scale preferred)
