Job Summary
Job Description
We are seeking a Senior DevOps - Data Engineer to architect and implement robust data infrastructure systems that power our competitive advantage in motorsports. In this senior-level role, you'll design and maintain scalable data ingestion pipelines, optimize database performance, and establish DevOps best practices that enable our racing teams to make data-driven decisions in real-time. You'll work directly with the Director of Software Development to transform telemetry, sensor data, and operational information into structured, accessible datasets that fuel our Applied Technologies initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Data Infrastructure Architecture
- Design and implement comprehensive data ingestion frameworks capable of handling high-frequency telemetry, sensor data, video streams, and operational datasets
- Architect and optimize scalable database solutions using PostgreSQL and TimescaleDB for motorsports analytics and real-time querying
- Develop automated data validation, monitoring, and alerting systems to maintain data integrity at scale
- Create and maintain data governance standards ensuring data quality, consistency, and accessibility across racing operations
DevOps Engineering & Automation
- Design and implement CI/CD pipelines for data processing applications and infrastructure deployments
- Lead containerization strategies using Docker, Docker-Compose, and orchestration platforms for consistent, scalable data processing environments
- Implement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) practices for automated provisioning and configuration management
- Drive cloud-native architecture adoption across AWS platforms to support data and analytics needs while monitoring cost and managing budgetary constraints
- Establish comprehensive monitoring, alerting, and incident response procedures for mission-critical data systems
Security & Compliance
- Implement comprehensive security practices including Linux hardening, TLS certificate automation, and access controls
- Establish data security, encryption, and privacy best practices aligned with industry standards (CIS baselines preferred)
- Manage secrets, credential rotation, and audit trail requirements for regulatory compliance
- Design secure API endpoints and authentication/authorization systems
Data Pipeline Development
- Build and maintain robust ETL/ELT pipelines using Python > 3.10, processing large-scale datasets (200+ GB)
- Implement real-time and batch data processing workflows using modern data processing frameworks
- Develop API integrations using requests library for external data sources and service connectivity
- Create automated data quality checks and validation processes throughout the data pipeline
Performance & Reliability Engineering
- Ensure 24/7 reliability of data systems supporting race weekends, testing sessions, and simulation environments
- Optimize system performance to support sub-second data processing requirements during live racing events
- Implement disaster recovery and business continuity plans for all data infrastructure
- Maintain system scalability to handle peak loads during race events and data-intensive operations
Technical Leadership & Collaboration
- Mentor junior team members on DevOps methodologies, data engineering best practices, and cloud technologies
- Collaborate closely with the Director of Software Development, data scientists, and race team personnel
- Lead technical architecture discussions and drive technology standardization across the data ecosystem
Required Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Software Engineering, or related technical field
- 10+ years of experience in DevOps roles with proven track record in data engineering and infrastructure management
- 5+ years of experience building and scaling data infrastructure in high-performance, mission-critical environments
- Demonstrated experience leading complex technical projects and mentoring engineering teams
Technical Expertise
Computer Skills & Languages
- Python: Expert-level proficiency in Python > 3.10 for data engineering, automation, and infrastructure scripting
- SQL: Advanced SQL skills for complex query optimization, database design, and performance tuning
- CSS: Working knowledge of CSS for dashboard and web interface customization
Infrastructure & DevOps Tools
- Version Control: Advanced GitHub experience including branching strategies, code review processes, and CI/CD integration
- Cloud Platforms: Expert-level knowledge of Amazon Web Services (AWS) including data services, compute, storage, and networking
- Containerization: Production-level experience with Docker, Docker-Compose, Docker Desktop, and container orchestration
- APIs: Extensive experience with API design, implementation, and integration for data services
- Databases: Expert-level experience with PostgreSQL and TimescaleDB including performance optimization, scaling, and administration; experience with slow-query analysis, and indexing/partitioning strategies
Python Packages & Libraries
- Data Processing: Advanced proficiency in Pandas and NumPy for large-scale data manipulation and analysis
- Web Services: Expert-level use of requests library for API development and data integration
DevOps & Infrastructure Skills
- Expert knowledge of CI/CD pipeline design and implementation (GitHub Actions)
- Strong experience with Infrastructure as Code tools (Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible)
- Production experience with monitoring and observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK stack)
- Deep understanding of network security, data encryption, and compliance best practices
- Experience with big data technologies and stream processing frameworks
Leadership & Communication
- Proven ability to lead technical teams and mentor junior engineers
- Experience driving complex, multi-stakeholder infrastructure projects
- Excellent communication skills with ability to present technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Strong project management skills with experience managing complex technical implementations under tight deadlines and mission-critical constraints
- Experience managing vendor relationships and technology partnerships
Preferred Qualifications
Motorsports & High-Performance Environments
- Previous experience in motorsports (NASCAR, Xfinity, IndyCar) or high-performance environments
- Understanding of telemetry systems, NATS and SSE streaming data, and websockets
- Familiarity with real-time data processing and low-latency system design requirements
Advanced Technical Skills
- Experience with data lake and data warehouse architectures (Snowflake, Databricks, Redshift)
- Knowledge of machine learning operations (MLOps) and model deployment pipelines
- Experience in high-frequency data environments (financial trading, IoT, gaming, sports analytics)
- Understanding of edge computing and distributed system architectures
- Certification in AWS Solutions Architect or equivalent cloud platforms
- ERP Integration Experience: Background with SAP or similar enterprise systems for operational data integration
- Security Expertise: Experience with CIS-aligned security baselines, Linux/Windows Server hardening, and compliance frameworks
Specialized Experience
- Experience with Apache Spark, Kafka, Flink, Airflow, or similar big data technologies
- Knowledge of data mesh architectures and microservices patterns
- Experience with Docker Compose and advanced container orchestration
- Background in data security and privacy best practices
