The ArcGIS App Development Intern is a student position utilizing a combination of technical expertise, creativity, a collaborative spirit, and self-motivation. The ArcGIS App Development Intern uses skills to improve the user experience of an ArcGIS Online application known as the MORPC Insights data platform ( ) by developing new data visualization features and improving the user experience for existing features. Intern works under the direct supervision of the Associate Director of Data Analytics.

This position is responsible for supporting MORPC's team of data professionals, for example, by developing applications in ArcGIS Online, especially ArcGIS Dashboards and Experience Builder, by making recommendations to improve the accessibility of applications to users with disabilities, and to help the team select novel data to be presented via the applications. Key strengths of the ArcGIS App Development Intern include strong technical skills for working with data across the data lifecycle, organizational and time management skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, passion for collaboration and innovation, and a drive for independent learning.

Example of Duties:

  • Develop ArcGIS Dashboards to visualize spatial and non-spatial data
  • Evaluate user experience of existing ArcGIS Experience Builder application and propose and prototype new user interface features.
  • Learn about techniques to improve user experience for disabled users (i.e. digital accessibility)
  • Evaluate digital accessibility of existing ArcGIS Online applications, and propose and prototype digital accessibility improvements
  • Develop system for cataloging and managing corrective and preventive actions to address app deficiencies
  • Perform quality assurance verification on new application features, data, and narrative content
  • With other MORPC staff, meet with project funder to develop consensus on project priorities and identify what new datasets to add to the Insights platform.
  • Follow provided work instructions to carry out automated and semi-automated data management processes (extract-transform-load)
  • Create process documentation, including work instructions and data flow diagrams
  • Capture metadata for input and output datasets and variables
  • Gather mission-critical data from unstructured documents such as land use plans, media coverage, and technical reports
  • Collaborate with MORPC staff in Data & Mapping and other departments to produce narrative content to accompany data visualizations
  • Provide responsive and professional customer service

  • Follow established agency practices for maintaining the security and integrity of sensitive or confidential information.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

This position requires strong organizational and time management skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, a passion for collaboration and innovation, and a drive for self-learning. In particular, the ArcGIS App Development Intern will be expected to familiarize themselves with concepts and requirements related to digital accessibility with limited guidance. Working knowledge of MS Office 365 suite is essential.

The position requires technical skills, notably familiarity with the ArcGIS Online platform. Prior experience managing data in the ArcGIS Online environment is required. Prior experience developing data visualization web applications using ArcGIS Dashboards and/or ArcGIS Experience Builder is preferred. Prior experience applying digital accessibility concepts in an ArcGIS environment is preferred. Familiarity with user experience design for web apps is preferred. Familiarity with data analysis and transformation is required. Prior experience with data visualization tools and principles of data visualization design is required. Experience with programmatic data transformation, analysis, and management (e.g., using Python, R, or similar) is preferred. Familiarity with principles of formal quality management (e.g. plan-do-check-act cycles) is preferred.

This is a team-oriented position, although the applicant must possess the ability to work

independently. A strong work ethic and excellent interpersonal communication skills are a must.

Acceptable Experience and Training:

This position is open to undergraduate or graduate students pursuing a course of study in

Geographic Information Science, Data Science, Data Analytics, Data Engineering, Computer

Science, Statistics, or other related disciplines.

Essential Functions:

This is a part-time position at 20 hours per week. Candidate will be expected to work in person

at the MORPC office; however remote work arrangements may be permitted at the discretion of the supervisor and or department needs.
