Job Description
The Injection Molding Process & Mold Maintenance Technician is responsible for optimizing injection molding processes and maintaining injection molds to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality production. This role combines process troubleshooting, mold maintenance, and technical support for injection molding equipment. The technician will work closely with production, engineering, and quality teams to maintain tooling, improve cycle times, reduce scrap, and ensure molds operate at peak performance. This position requires strong knowledge of injection molding machines, mold tooling, polymers, and preventive maintenance practices.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Injection Molding Process Support
- Set up, start up, and optimize injection molding machines and processes.
- Establish and maintain process parameters including temperature, pressure, cooling, and cycle time.
- Troubleshoot molding defects such as:
- Short shots
- Flash
- Sink marks
- Warpage
- Burns
- Splay
- Support process validation and process improvement initiatives.
- Monitor production runs and make adjustments to maintain product quality and cycle time targets.
- Assist engineering with process development and mold trials.
Mold Maintenance & Tooling
- Perform preventative maintenance (PM) on injection molds.
- Disassemble, inspect, clean, and reassemble molds.
- Inspect and maintain critical mold components such as:
- Core and cavity surfaces
- Ejector systems
- Slides and lifters
- Cooling channels
- Gates and runners
- Shut-offs
- Repair or replace worn mold components such as ejector pins, springs, leader pins, bushings, and seals.
- Diagnose mold issues that impact part quality or machine performance.
- Maintain mold documentation and maintenance records.
Equipment Maintenance
- Assist with maintenance of injection molding equipment including:
- Hydraulic systems
- Pneumatic systems
- Temperature controllers
- Hot runner systems
- Auxiliary equipment (dryers, loaders, chillers)
- Troubleshoot mechanical issues affecting molding operations.
- Work with maintenance teams on machine repairs.
Quality & Process Control
- Ensure molds and processes meet quality specifications and production standards.
- Assist with first article inspections and process capability studies.
- Support continuous improvement activities to reduce scrap and improve efficiency.
- Ensure compliance with quality management systems and documented procedures.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all plant safety policies and lockout/tagout procedures.
- Ensure molds and machines are operated safely.
- Maintain clean and organized work areas following 5S standards.
- Support environmental and safety compliance requirements.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Technical training or certification in Tool & Die, Injection Molding, or Industrial Maintenance preferred.
- 3–5 years experience in injection molding processing and mold preventative maintenance.
- Strong knowledge of:
- Plastic resins and material behavior
- Injection molding machine operation
- Mold construction and components
- Mold maintenance procedures
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- RJG or Scientific Molding training.
- Experience with hot runner systems (Incoe, Mold-Masters, DME, etc.).
- Experience with Insert molding with overmold knowledge, multi-cavity and low to medium-volume production molds, shuttle molding machines (vertical) for insert molding.
- Ability to read tooling drawings and mechanical prints.

- Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must comply with client safety requirements (e.g., steel-toe boots).
- Must be able to:
- Lift and carry up to 50 lbs. (Use assistance for heavier loads).
- Stand or walk for extended periods
- Work around manufacturing equipment and tooling
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Manufacturing environment with exposure to heat, noise, and moving equipment.
- May require shift work, overtime, or weekend support depending on production needs.
