Interim Controller
Location: Downtown Chicago | 3 days on-site, Wednesday required
Pay Range: $60$75/hour

Our client, a well-established nonprofit organization , is seeking an Interim Controller to provide hands-on leadership and stability within the Finance Department during a period of transition. This role will oversee core accounting operations, ensure accurate financial reporting, and serve as a key partner to senior leadership.
The ideal candidate is a seasoned nonprofit finance professional who can quickly step in, take ownership of day-to-day accounting activities, support audit readiness, and guide a developing accounting team through process improvements and system adoption.
Whats the Job?- Lead and oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and cash management, ensuring compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
- Own and execute the month-end close process, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and timely preparation of monthly financial statements
- Prepare, review, and analyze financial reports, budget-to-actual variances, and key metrics for senior leadership
- Partner with leadership on audit coordination, grant and contract financial reporting, and internal control compliance
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff, providing oversight, guidance, and hands-on support while driving process improvements and system optimization (Sage Intacct)
- Extensive nonprofit accounting experience, including fund accounting, restricted assets, grants, contributions, and Form 990 support
- Strong technical accounting background with the ability to review work, identify issues, and ensure accurate financial reporting
- Proven leadership experience managing and supporting accounting teams during periods of transition or change
- Experience with Sage Intacct or a comparable accounting system, including chart of accounts and reporting structures
- Ability to operate independently, prioritize effectively, and bring a calm, solutions-oriented approach in a dynamic environment
