The Assistant Controller supports the Controller in managing all accounting and financial functions of the company. This role is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, supporting project accounting, ensuring compliance with GAAP, and assisting in the development of financial reports used by operations and leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & General Ledger

  • Assist in preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Maintain and reconcile the general ledger, including job cost and overhead accounts.
  • Prepare WIP (Work-in-Progress) schedules and revenue recognition calculations.
  • Support month-end and year-end close processes.

Project Accounting & Job Cost Support

  • Work closely with project managers to monitor budgets, cost projections, and financial performance.
  • Review job cost entries for accuracy, including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor costs.
  • Assist with change order financial impact analysis.
  • Support timely billing and documentation for progress payment applications.

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Assist in preparation of annual budgets and project-level financial forecasts.
  • Provide variance analysis for both company-wide and project-specific financials.
  • Help identify trends, risks, and opportunities that impact financial performance.

 

Accounts Payable & Accounts Receivable Oversight

  • Oversee and support AP/AR staff with issue resolution, process improvements, and policy adherence.
  • Ensure accurate subcontractor compliance (lien waivers, insurance, pay applications).
  • Assist with collections and monitoring of outstanding receivables.

Cash Management & Compliance

  • Assist with cash flow forecasting and bank reconciliations.
  • Help maintain internal controls and ensure compliance with GAAP and construction-specific regulations.
  • Support external financial audits, bonding audits, and tax filings as needed.

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Help optimize accounting processes and implement best practices.
  • Recommend and support ongoing improvements to the ERP system.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline.
  • 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience; construction industry experience required.
  • Public accounting experience preferred.

Technical & Industry Skills

  • Strong understanding of construction accounting, job costing with unit cost, WIP reporting, and percentage-of-completion methods.
  • Proficiency with ERP systems commonly used in construction (Viewpoint Vista, Sage 300, CMiC, Foundation, etc.).
  • Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, data modeling).
