This position will be filled at one of the following levels depending upon the candidate's qualifications:

Equipment & Transportation Technician I ($31.52 - $43.97)

Performs skilled mechanical work in repairing and maintaining various mechanical equipment, including heavy construction equipment, earth-moving equipment, agricultural implements, industrial and commercial generators, vehicles, and plant mechanical equipment. Fabricates parts and installs new equipment. Uses independent judgement in carrying out field assignments. Participates and assists with training activities. Works under the direction of a supervisor. May provide guidance to maintenance workers.


Equipment & Transportation Technician II ($34.04 - $47.49)

Performs skilled mechanical work in repairing and maintaining various mechanical equipment, including heavy construction equipment, earth-moving equipment, agricultural implements, industrial and commercial generators, vehicles, and plant mechanical equipment. Fabricates parts and installs new equipment. Uses independent judgement in carrying out field assignments. Participates and assists with training activities. Works under the direction of a supervisor. May sometimes direct the work of maintenance workers in lower classification.

 

Qualifications:

Equipment & Transportation Technician I
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities


Knowledge of:

  • Electrical and hydraulic systems.
  • CAT SIS and Cummins Insight diagnostic programs.
  • Basic computer systems and processes
  • Common safety procedures related to a mechanical repair shop 

Skilled at:

  • Maintenance and repair of heavy equipment or tractor trailers
  • Gas and diesel engine maintenance and repair, including hand, power, and shop tools.
  • Reading and following drawings and schematics and maintaining various written logs/reports. 

Ability to:

  • Weld steel and aluminum with electric or acetylene welding equipment.
  • Perform metal layout and fabrication.
  • Attain a class A commercial driver's license (CDL) with HazMat endorsement 
  • Complete training and certification programs 
  • Effectively communicate


Education
Graduation from high school or GED. Completion of trade school program or apprenticeship program in heavy equipment maintenance, diesel mechanic, or similar program.



Equipment & Transportation Technician II
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Maintenance techniques of land application equipment, cranes, boiler maintenance, and tractor trailers.
  • Knowledge of electrical and hydraulic systems. 
  • Knowledge of CAT SIS and Cummins Insight diagnostic programs. 
  • Air conditioning systems.
  • Computer software, particularly M/S Outlook, Word, and/or a computerized material maintenance system (CMMS).
  • Common safety procedures related to a mechanical repair shop 

Skilled at:

  • Maintaining and repairing vehicles, heavy earth-moving equipment, agricultural equipment, generators, and tractor-trailers. 
  • Working with electrical and hydraulic systems. 
  • Diagnostic equipment and systems
  • Gas and diesel engine maintenance and repair skills, including hand, power, and shop tools. 
  • Reading and following drawings and schematics and maintaining written logs/reports.  
  • Welding steel and aluminum with electric or acetylene welding equipment. 
  • Metal layout and fabrication.
  • Good verbal and written communication

Ability to:

  • Acting as a subject matter expert in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment
  • Provide mentorship and leadership to lower-level technicians
  • Complete training and certification programs 
  • Demonstrating repair shop safety procedures
  • Identify opportunities for efficiency improvement
  • Organize and coordinate work assignments, including post-job follow up documentation and communication


Education, Certification, and Licenses
Graduation from high school or GED. Completion of trade school program or apprenticeship program in heavy equipment maintenance, diesel mechanic, or similar program. Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) with HazMat endorsement.
