Job Description School Nurse (TOSA)

Title: School Nurse

Reports To: Director of Special Services

Terms of Employment: Salary and work year as established by the Board of Education and in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.

Job Goal / Purpose

The School Nurse serves as a health consultant, ensuring compliance with district, county, state, and federal health regulations. The nurse promotes the health and safety of all students by supporting prevention, early detection, and management of health concerns; ensuring state immunization requirements are met; and assisting staff, students, and families in addressing health needs that impact learning.

Qualifications

  • Valid Ohio certification/license.
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Performance Responsibilities

Health Program Administration

  • Prepare and submit required state annual health reports and other periodic requirements.
  • Conduct and oversee screening programs based on the Ohio Revised Code minimum guidelines.
  • Order supplies and maintain equipment for district health programs.

Student Health Services

  • Observe students as needed to detect health concerns.
  • Maintain health records for all students, contributing to the development of IEPs and 504 plans for students with medical needs.
  • Inform staff (with parental permission) about specific health concerns to support educational programming.
  • Administer first aid in accordance with procedures established by the Franklin County Board of Health.
  • Exclude and readmit students with infectious/contagious diseases per Ohio Department of Health guidelines.
  • Provide blood pressure measurements for students and staff as needed.
  • Develop and monitor care plans for students with chronic health conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes, seizure disorders).
  • Train staff who interact with students daily to recognize symptoms and respond appropriately.

Collaboration & Support

  • Act as a resource and consultant to students, parents, and staff.
  • Participate in parent conferences and act as a liaison between parents, staff, community agencies, and health professionals.
  • Ensure Health Paraprofessionals and staff receive appropriate guidance and support to safely perform student care tasks (e.g., medication administration, tube feeding, blood sugar monitoring).
  • Participate in the annual Kindergarten Roundup.
  • Collaborate with counselors, social workers, and Health Lab Coordinators to identify health-related factors impacting behavior and learning.
  • Support referrals to community-based health and behavioral health services.

Emergency Preparedness

  • Participate in developing and practicing school emergency response plans.
  • Train staff on Diabetes care, EPI-PEN use, and other first-response health protocols.
  • Maintain up-to-date emergency medical equipment in the buildings.

Family & Community Engagement

  • Provide resources and guidance to families about student health issues.
  • Serve as a liaison between the school and community health providers.
  • Support health promotion campaigns (e.g., flu prevention, dental health, mental wellness).

Data & Accountability

  • Maintain accurate health records that align with HIPAA and FERPA.
  • Use data to track health trends in the school (immunization compliance, visits, chronic illness patterns).
  • Contribute data to school improvement and attendance initiatives.

Other Duties

  • Perform other related tasks as assigned by the administration.

Working Conditions / Physical Demands

  • Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue.
  • Excellent observation and communication skills.
  • May perform strenuous tasks, such as lifting, when working with students.
  • Assisting students with behavioral/management needs.
  • Frequent interaction with a diverse population of students, staff, and families.
  • As necessary, job duties may require the employee to access multi-occupancy restrooms, locker rooms, shower rooms, and changing rooms of the opposite biological sex.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Board policy and provisions of the collective bargaining agreement, ensuring alignment with district goals and expectations.
