Job Description:

I. Position Summary:

HSL provides enhanced housing with services to seniors living affordable housing locations, and at partner housing locations, with the goal of improving quality of life and supporting independent living.

We are looking for a motivated, proactive individual who is responsible for developing and implementing engaging fitness programs for residents in which the whole personal wellness philosophy of Hebrew SeniorLife and the value of fitness is reinforced. Educates older adults in various health-related topics, and evaluates and tracks residents fitness progress. Acts as a motivational force to support residents in developing a healthy, active and well-balanced lifestyle.

III. Position Responsibilities:
  • Administers individualized fitness assessments to residents including a review of health history and health priorities to determine appropriate fitness programs for residents

  • Implements comprehensive fitness programs for older adult residents based upon residents health, fitness assessment and fitness goals

  • Develops and directs comprehensive fitness programs that maximize participation and healthy functional independence of residents

  • Oversees and supervises residents progress in all areas related to a residents fitness plan including: strength training, balance and cardiovascular endurance

  • Designs, develops and teaches group exercise classes

  • Provides educational programs on nutrition, fitness, balance, memory and other subjects that enhance and enable wellness in spirit, mind, and body

Collaborate with onsite resident services team to identify and communicate changes in resident status/condition

  • Collaborates with physical therapists and physicians to begin or continue an exercise program for those with illness, surgery, or injuries

  • Keeps statistics & data on residents involvement and progress within the program. Also measures participation level and plans for optimal involvement

  • Collaborates with other HSL fitness staff to stay up to date with current trends, new exercise equipment and current research

  • Assists or makes recommendations on new equipment purchases and other budget expenditures

  • Oversees, maintains and coordinates the maintenance of fitness facilities

  • Develops measurable criteria for residents to understand the value of the programs

  • Creates and expands innovative fitness programs to meet the needs of the residents and fitness trends.

  • Some travel in the Boston metro area for site visits and meetings is required.

IV. Required Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge of exercise equipment and safety practices

  • Able to accomplish all responsibilities with little supervision

  • Works as a team member by proactively working to meet resident needs

  • Exhibits a professional and enthusiastic demeanor when assisting residents, their family and friends

  • Demonstrates an ability to effectively communicate with all residents

  • Pays attention to own and others safety when carrying out responsibilities

  • 2-5 years experience in the fitness field working with seniors

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Exercise Physiology or related field

  • ACSM Fitness certification preferred

  • Must have compassion for and a desire to work with a senior population.

  • Excellent organization and interpersonal skills. Must have ability to innovate, think strategically and conceptually, manage multiple projects simultaneously and handle difficult situations.

  • Must be a professional, proactive, collaborative, conscientious, and results-oriented individual. Must have an optimistic and positive demeanor, excellent oral and written communication skills, good intuition and sound judgment. Must be motivated to learn and flexible to change.

  • Computer literacy; experience with Windows, Word, Power Point, and Excel.

  • Certification in Dementia Care preferred.
