JOB SUMMARY:

The Controller regularly exercises independent judgment and financial oversight to lead and manage all accounting functions of the Company, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timeliness of financial reporting. In addition to overseeing the accounting team, this role is responsible for the full spectrum of accounting operations, including but not limited to, Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Payroll, Contractor billings, and financial reporting. As a key partner to the Leadership Team, the Controller provides timely, accurate and actionable financial information to support informed economic decision-making and strategic future planning. This position spends more than 50% of time performing management duties and/or responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Financial Management and Accounting Operations

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting and finance operations including, but not limited to, the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, taxes, contractor billings, and financial consolidations.
  • Establish, implement, and maintain systems and controls to ensure the integrity of all financial processes and data in accordance with GAAP and applicable regulations.
  • Prepare and review financial statements, management reports, and other financial analyses as required.
  • Coordinate month-end and year-end close processes, including preparation for and execution of financial audits.
  • Oversee Contractor billing process. Generate Pay Requests and Company Billings for Fee and General Conditions to ensure timely and accurate payments.
  • Generate weekly Company payroll.

Leadership and Team Management

  • Manage the Accounts Payable and Receivable Department personnel, ensuring efficient workflow, proper task delegation, and timely and accurate processing.
  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and performance oversight to accounting staff.
  • Take a proactive leadership role in supporting and encouraging positive employee morale.

Employee and Benefits Administration

  • Partner with the HR Department to ensure complete, accurate, and compliant record-keeping, including personnel files, tax documentation, and other required employment records in accordance with applicable laws.
  • Collaborate with HR Department to reconcile employee time-off reporting, accruals, and balances, ensuring accurate payroll inputs and financial reporting.
  • Coordinate with the HR Department to ensure timely processing and payment of employee benefit programs, including insurance plans, 401(K) plans, ESOP, ensuring accurate premiums, contributions, reconciliations, and compliance with plan requirements.

Strategic Support and Communication

  • Provide the Leadership Team with accurate and timely financial information to support business planning and operational decisions.
  • Communicate with co-workers, management, clients and other operational partners in a courteous and professional manner.
  • And such other duties and/or responsibilities as are assigned by the Company.

 

Education, Experience, and Qualifications:

  • 7-10 years of accounting experience within the construction industry, with progressive responsibility.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance or comparable field and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certifications related to Accounting and Finance preferred.

 

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • In depth knowledge of General Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Strong working knowledge of general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, tax and banking functions.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Windows and Office applications (including Excel and Word).
  • Experience with construction accounting systems is preferred.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities, provide clear direction, and communicate in a professional and courteous manner, both in individual and group settings.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Supervisory / Management Skills:

  • Responsible for supervising one (1) to five (5) Accounting Department personnel.
