Job Title: Dental Assistant 1 Department: Dentistry | Sterilization

The Ohio State University's College of Dentistry seeks a Dental Assistant (Sterilization/Dispensing) to join the patient care team in Clinic Administration to support the Dental Clinics. The Colleges Central Sterilization Unit and Dispensing Units within Clinic Administration are important functions in the health care delivery system, providing safe, effective, and efficient instrument processing and dispensing services to the college clinics.

The Ohio State University College of Dentistry is the fourth largest public dental school in the United States and it is the only public dental school in Ohio. The college is divided into ten divisions with all major ADA-recognized dental specialties represented. The College has approximately 600 students in its undergraduate and graduate programs.

The Dental Assistant (Sterilization/Dispensing Floater) will be responsible for providing sterilization and dispensing services for instruments and materials used in the College of Dentistry clinics. This position works between Central Sterilization and the Dispensing Units based on operational needs. Responsibilities include decontamination, maintenance, inspection, preparation, processing, and dispatch of instrumentation and supplies; stocking sterile supplies and equipment according to infection control standards; performing quality control testing and monitoring of sterilization equipment; and assisting with quarterly inventory. In the dispensing areas, this position assists students and faculty in the provision of patient care and simulation activities by dispensing a high volume of supplies and equipment in a fast-paced clinical environment; accurately scans equipment and instrument cassettes in and out utilizing the college tracking system or established manual process; stocks and orders supplies for dispensary areas and clinical cabinets; examines returned equipment, instrument cassettes, bur blocks, and other items for wear, damage, or missing elements; cleans student back labs daily; heat seals dispensary supplies; and follows OSHA, HIPAA, and college safety and infection control procedures.

Work Schedule:

MondayThursday 11:30am8:30pm;

Friday 8:30am5:30pm. May work nights and/or weekends as needed for college events.

Compensation: $18.37 - $23.99 USD

Physical Requirements:

Frequent lifting/pulling/pushing up to 50lbs; bending/twisting/turning/reaching below knees and above shoulders on a regular basis; standing/sitting/walking for periods of time. Candidate must have the use of both hands; other specific requirements include significant manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination, color spectrum differentiation, visual acuity, and effective communication skills. Individuals in this position may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens, chemical hazards (skin irritants), vibrating equipment, sharp instruments, and latex. Demonstrates ability to work well with others as part of a fast-paced team.

This position requires successful completion of a criminal background check and drug and alcohol screening.

Per Classified Civil Service Specifications:

3 months experience (3 courses) in dental office practices and procedures; 3 months experience (3 courses) in dental operatory practices and procedures; 3 months experience (3 courses) in four-handed assisting techniques; 3 months experience (3 courses) in inventory record-keeping; 3 months experience (300 hrs. training) in care of dental equipment; 1 month experience (100 hrs. training) in using a computer. MUST PASS HEALTH STANDARDS AND REQUIREMENTS PRESCRIBED BY LAW PRIOR TO APPOINTMENT (e.g., hepatitis vaccination series and TB test). Positions performing radiography must be registered with the Ohio Dental Board as a Dental Assistant Radiographer.

Demonstrated knowledge of infection control procedures, sterilization procedures, OSHA and HIPAA regulations, dental terminology and instruments; experience using a personal computer and Microsoft Office; experience in a customer service setting; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to consistently contribute to and work within a fast-paced team environment.

Desired Qualifications:

Three or more years of full time chair side experience or 6 years or more of part-time chair side experience; current CPR license; current radiology license; high school diploma or equivalent; and completion of an accredited dental assistant training program. Knowledge of dental technology, terminology, office practices and procedures, inventory recordkeeping procedures, infection control procedures, sterilization procedures, OSHA and HIPAA, dental nomenclature, products and instruments. Experience using a personal computer and Microsoft Office to generate a variety of materials ranging from basic to complex; experience in customer service setting; excellent interpersonal skills; ability to consistently contribute to and work within a fast-paced team environment.
