Senior Systems Engineer

MBA Consulting Services, Inc. (MBA CSi) is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to support a long-term, multi-year engagement with the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) at the Engineering Systems Headquarters in Merrifield, VA. In this role, you will support and modernize mission-critical USPS engineering systems by maintaining, enhancing, and monitoring complex enterprise platforms across Linux, Windows, OpenVMS, and virtualized environments.

Responsibilities

• Perform Linux system administration tasks, including logical disk configuration, user authorization, and system maintenance.
• Develop and maintain Bash scripts to support system operations and image repository management.
• Administer Windows systems, including creating and maintaining automation and monitoring scripts (.BAT, .VBS).
• Support OpenVMS system administration, including:
  • Managing user access and security
  • Writing and maintaining DCL scripts
  • Applying system patches and updates
  • Compiling and debugging programs in FORTRAN, PASCAL, C, and C++
• Monitor systems for performance issues, anomalies, and operational risks.
• Perform hardware monitoring and management, including:
  • Updating firmware on servers and related components
  • Diagnosing and triaging hardware issues for servers and storage arrays
• Administer storage arrays, including logical drive creation and system backups.
• Support virtualized environments by:
  • Starting, stopping, and modifying virtual machines
  • Adjusting VM resources such as memory and CPU
  • Migrating virtual machines between hosts
• Plan, design, develop, test, and deploy applications for monitoring hardware and software environments.
• Provide application monitoring and assist with help desk and customer support activities.
• Collaborate with engineering teams and stakeholders to document system designs, configurations, and support processes.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a related technical discipline.
• 8+ years of professional experience in systems engineering, software engineering, or a closely related field.
• Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience administering Linux systems.
• Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience administering Windows systems.
• Experience working with HPE and Dell server hardware, including monitoring and management.
• Knowledge of storage arrays and enterprise storage administration.
• At least 3 years of experience working in a virtualized environment.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to document technical designs and support procedures.
• Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team-based environment.
• Must pass a pre-employment background check and drug screening.

Preferred Qualifications

• OpenVMS system administration experience.
• Proficiency with OpenVMS DCL scripting.
• Experience evaluating and comparing vendor hardware solutions.
• Prior help desk or customer support experience.
• Experience supporting large-scale, enterprise or government systems.
