Job Summary
Job Description
The Construction Superintendent is responsible for the day-to-day on-site management of construction projects, ensuring work is completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with contract documents, company standards, and regulatory requirements. This role serves as the primary on-site authority, coordinating subcontractors, suppliers, inspectors, and field staff while maintaining productivity, quality, and safety.
Key Responsibilities
Project Execution & Site Management
Manage all on-site construction activities from project start through completion.
Interpret and enforce construction drawings, specifications, schedules, and contracts.
Develop, maintain, and execute the project schedule in coordination with the Project Manager.
Coordinate sequencing of work among trades to prevent conflicts and delays.
Monitor daily progress and adjust staffing, equipment, and methods as required.
Safety & Compliance
Enforce company safety policies and OSHA requirements at all times.
Conduct site safety meetings, toolbox talks, and daily safety inspections.
Ensure all subcontractors comply with safety regulations and site-specific safety plans.
Investigate and report incidents, near-misses, and corrective actions.
Quality Control
Ensure workmanship meets or exceeds contract documents and industry standards.
Perform inspections of work in progress and completed work.
Identify deficiencies and coordinate corrective actions with subcontractors.
Maintain punch lists and ensure timely closeout of deficiencies.
Subcontractor & Labor Coordination
Supervise and coordinate subcontractors, labor forces, and site personnel.
Verify subcontractor manpower, productivity, and adherence to schedule.
Review and approve subcontractor daily reports and work activities.
Foster a professional and cooperative jobsite environment.
Communication & Documentation
Serve as the primary on-site contact for owners, inspectors, and design professionals.
Participate in project meetings and provide field updates.
Maintain accurate daily logs, reports, photos, and field documentation.
Coordinate inspections, testing, and approvals with governing authorities.
Materials, Equipment & Logistics
Plan and coordinate material deliveries and site logistics.
Ensure proper storage, handling, and protection of materials and equipment.
Monitor equipment usage and site conditions to optimize efficiency.
Project Closeout
Oversee final inspections, commissioning, and turnover activities.
Ensure completion of punch list items and final documentation.
Support warranty and post-construction activities as required.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree in construction management or related field preferred.
Typically 5–10+ years of progressive construction field experience, including supervisory roles.
Experience in commercial, industrial, or multi-family construction preferred (as applicable).
Technical Skills
Strong knowledge of construction methods, means, and sequencing.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and schedules.
Proficiency with construction management software and field reporting tools.
Working knowledge of scheduling (e.g., CPM concepts) and quality control processes.
Leadership & Interpersonal Skills
Proven ability to lead field teams and subcontractors effectively.
Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and conflict-resolution skills.
Clear and professional communication with diverse stakeholders.
Certifications (Preferred or Required)
OSHA 30-Hour Construction Certification (often required).
First Aid/CPR certification.
Additional trade licenses or certifications as applicable.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Ability to walk job sites, climb ladders/scaffolding, and lift materials as needed.
Willingness to work extended hours, weekends, or travel as project demands require.
Reporting Structure
Reports to: Project Manager or Senior Superintendent
Supervises: Assistant Superintendents, Field Engineers, and Site Labor (as applicable)
