Job Description


Job Summary: The cook prepares and cooks nutritious meals for the patients and staff. Performs duties involving food preparation, cooking, and storage. They receive and check deliveries of food supplies. And they perform other duties as assigned.

The hours for this position are Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 6am to 6pm.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Cleans, cuts, prepares, and cooks meat, fish, seafood, or poultry to a safe temperature.
  2. Prepares and cooks various items according to menus, special dietary or nutritional requirements, or numbers of portions to be served.
  3. Bakes breads/rolls, cakes and pastries as needed.
  4. Helps prepare food and set up for, and clean up after, parties, luncheons and other gatherings as instructed.
  5. Makes especial requests available as needed or as requested by a patient.
  6. Ensures food is cooked at the appropriate temperature.
  7. Notifies the nursing units, in writing and in a timely manner, of any changes in the printed menu (at least one hour prior to serving the meal).
  8. Delivers and retrieves food carts to/from patients’ units and dumbwaiter for the convent.
  9. Monitors food use and prevents excessive waste.
  10. Washes cooking equipment, such as food carts, pots, pans, dishes, utensils, and other pieces after each meal as needed.
  11. Ensures the cleanliness and functional operation of kitchen equipment and appliances, such as stoves, ovens, steamer, refrigerators, and freezers, and work areas by routinely cleaning and inspecting each piece.
  12. Keeps work areas clean.
  13. Assists in the inventory of supplies and equipment.
  14. Stores food and supplies in designated areas.
  15. Accepts deliveries and monitors accuracy (i.e., count of items, weight of meats, etc.).
  16. Knows, understands, and follows all Sanitary and safety regulations.
  17. Reports all malfunctions or equipment problems to the dietary manager.
  18. Cooperates with other dietary employees to maintain a safe, efficient, and pleasant kitchen.
  19. Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • Has at least a High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED).
  • Has at least one year experience in food service. Prior food service work experience in a health care facility is preferred.
  • Food Handler Certificate.

Other Job Requirements:

  • Must be able to speak, read, write, and understand English well (for reading recipes, operating manuals, facility policies and procedures).
  • Must be dependable and honest.
  • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, extreme cold, extreme heat, and risk of electrical shock.
  • New York State requires personnel employed by a Skill Nursing Facility to be fingerprinted to determine eligibility for employment.
  • Must be vaccinated for COVID-19 and have a negative Tuberculosis (TB) test.
