Staff Accountant
Position Summary
The Staff Accountant is responsible for executing and owning defined components of the month-end close across multiple client accounts. This role requires strong technical accounting skills, high proficiency in QuickBooks Online and Excel, excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced, remote environment.
This is a hands-on accounting role, not an entry-level position. The Staff Accountant is expected to exercise judgment, meet deadlines consistently, and maintain clean, accurate financials with minimal oversight.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting & Month-End Close
Own assigned portions of the month-end close process
Prepare, post, and document journal entries
Perform and review bank, credit card, and balance sheet reconciliations
Investigate and resolve discrepancies and unknown transactions
Ensure financial records are accurate, complete, and timely
Escalate complex or non-routine accounting issues appropriately
QuickBooks Online (QBO)
Maintain and manage multiple client files in QuickBooks Online
Manage bank feeds, rules, and transaction workflows
Ensure proper account classifications and chart of accounts usage
Identify and correct prior-period errors when discovered
Maintain supporting documentation for all balance sheet accounts
Excel & Financial Analysis
Use Excel daily to support reconciliations, analysis, and reviews
Build and maintain schedules, rollforwards, and variance analyses
Use advanced Excel functions including XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP, SUMIFS, IF formulas, and pivot tables
Analyze large data sets exported from QBO to identify issues, trends, and anomalies
Client & Internal Communication
Respond to routine client accounting inquiries professionally and promptly
Request missing documentation and follow up proactively
Provide clear status updates on assigned tasks
Collaborate with Bookkeepers and Senior Accountants to ensure clean handoffs
Process & Quality Control
Follow established SOPs and workflows consistently
Document work clearly for review and continuity
Identify opportunities for process improvement and efficiency
Maintain firm standards for accuracy, organization, and responsiveness
Required Qualifications
Technical Skills
Strong proficiency in QuickBooks Online (required)
Intermediate / Advanced Excel skills (required)
Solid understanding of accrual-basis accounting
Experience with journal entries and account reconciliations
Ability to manage multiple deadlines across multiple clients
Excellent written and verbal communication (required)
Experience & Education
3–6 years of accounting or bookkeeping experience
Experience working with multiple clients or in a virtual environment preferred
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred (or equivalent practical experience preferred)
