Digital Messaging Software Engineer

As a Software Engineer for our Digital Messaging product team you will be playing a crucial part in ensuring our Nationwide line of business partners deploy awesome solutions for our customers across all our messaging channels. Our team builds solutions which enable teams spanning the enterprise to develop, test, deploy and observe their message payloads through platform self-service tooling and automation. We do this by leveraging technologies like AWS, Oracle, MongoDB and industry standards across SMS, MMS, RCS, and modern DevOps methodologies.

We are building and supporting the platform which sends 90 million customer facing emails and 40 million customer facing texts each year! We serve over 30 internal product teams at Nationwide and are considered mission critical. Our team is lean, elite, and most of all our success is directly attributed to our diversity and culture.

Wed love to talk with you if you possess:

  • Intermediate skills in Java, SQL, and/or API/back-end development

  • Ability to upgrade, maintain, and resolve issues within product suite of applications, as well as incident management for our partner integrations

  • Experience and appreciation for working in a mature product operating model, leveraging End-to-End Agile practices, DevSecOps and cloud hosted and SaaS applications

  • Problem-solving skills with proven agility to work with other team members

  • Experience with solution delivery and support efforts to deliver business results

  • Natural curiosity and ability to learn and apply innovative technology to create compelling solutions

  • Outstanding relationship building, communication and presentation skills

  • Experience supporting mission-critical applications in a fast-paced environment

  • Previous exposure to some of the following solutions & services; CI/CD Systems, GitHub Actions, Kafka

  • Understanding of AWS or other public cloud providers

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will focus primarily on providing high quality, efficient technology solutions to business partners by crafting new software applications or modifying and/or supporting existing packaged or custom-built applications. In this capacity, youll analyze, code, configure, test, debug, document and maintain applications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyzes, solutions, develops, tests, debugs, documents and deploys software according to standards and best practices.

  • Applies secure software and systems engineering practices throughout the delivery lifecycle to ensure our data and technology solutions are protected from threats and vulnerabilities.

  • Uses DevSecOps practices, tooling and techniques.

  • Drives continuous improvement and learning through ongoing training, practice and innovation.

  • Manages project priorities, deadlines and deliverables proactively.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to a Technology Manager/Director.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Undergraduate studies in computer science, management information systems, or other related degree. Technology experience or non-traditional technology certificates can be substituted for an undergraduate degree.

Experience: Two or more years of analysis and technology experience.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Proficiency in one or more programming language such as Java, C++, Python, JavaScript. Knowledge of software development lifecycle. Proven ability to tackle moderately sophisticated business and development problems. Ability to thrive in a team environment. Insurance/financial services industry knowledge a plus.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring managers leader and Human Resources Business Partner.
