Special Education ParaProfessionals

Under the direction of a certified teacher or administrator, assist individuals or small groups of students to gain the maximum educational benefit possible.

Qualifications:

  1. High School diploma or equivalent; bachelor's or associate degree preferred along with meeting the ESSA/MDE Paraprofessional requirements.
  2. Valid Michigan Driver’s License.
  3. Documented satisfactory experience working with school age children.
  4. Knowledge, ability, and competency to operate computers required.
  5. Must be polite, tactful, confidential, and helpful in dealing with students and staff.
  6. Good health, neat appearance, ability to work independently, and accept responsibility.
  7. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the district may find appropriate and acceptable.
  8. Always remain free of substance abuse and/or illegal drug use

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Maintain confidentiality regarding the student, information and materials used in this position
  2. Assist the bus driver in any way needed to promote the safe transporting of the student(s) in all situations and conditions
  3. Assist the bus driver in maintaining a clean and sanitary bus
  4. Assist the bus driver in maintaining discipline on the bus
  5. Follow established procedures in reporting any problems created by student(s). Assist bus driver with all persons on the bus, the reporting of discipline infractions and total operation of the bus
  6. Become familiar with school bus emergency procedures
  7. Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor
  8. Work closely with building administration and teaching staff to remain current in curriculum expectations.
  9. Work with students to reinforce learning activities which may include programs outside of the school day.
  10. Participate in job related professional development programs as designated by administration.
  11. Complete all required reports and forms.
  12. Alert classroom teacher and/or administrator to document problems, concerns, incidents, or special information about an individual student (mandated reporter)
  13. Provide testing support as directed by counselor, administrator, or teacher.
  14. Assist in carrying out individual educational plans as written by the Individualized Education
  15. Planning Team; including swimming, where it is a part of the program.
  16. Accompany and participate with class on field trips to provide students with community experiences.
  17. Assist the students in such physical tasks as: meeting the bus on arrival and assisting student on and off bus; helping them in putting on and taking off outer wear, assist with personal care needs such as eating, toileting, wiping noses, cleaning up drool, vomit, and toileting accidents (possible catheterization)
  18. General classroom duties: duplicating and correcting materials; keeping attendance records, preparing snacks and clean-up and basic preparation at the beginning and the end of the session.
  19. Prepare bulletin boards, teaching aides and teaching materials.
  20. Establish as fully as possible a supportive and sympathetic relationship with the students without fostering or encouraging intense emotional involvement.
  21. Maintain log or records of class activities on each student as directed by the teacher or supervisor.
  22. Follow prescribed behavior modification techniques.
  23. Able to follow speech and language, occupation, or physical therapy program, which has been set up by the speech and language therapist, occupational and physical therapist, or classroom teacher.
  24. Accompany student(s) to regular education classes.
  25. Perform all other-directed tasks and aid requested by building principal, special education teacher or Special Education Director.
  26. In the event of staff shortage, this position may be reassigned for the day.
  27. Student and room coverage/supervision as assigned.

Reports to: Transportation Director and/or Building Principal, Directives of Special Education Supervisor.

Terms of Employment: Per Negotiated Agreement/Salary Per Negotiated
