We provide an extensive range of specialized eye care services to Alaskans. We’ve been here since 1972, growing to meet the needs of our valued patients, our community, and our neighbors.

Ophthalmic Associates (O.A.) was founded in 1972 when Kenneth T. Richardson, M.D. left the chairmanship at University of Pittsburgh to return to Alaska. Nurse Karen Lowe and orthoptist Diane Armitage helped to set up our initial office at 6th & K St. Additional doctors were recruited, including Aharon Sternberg, Ed Crouch, Jan Nyboer, Scott Limstrom, and Bob Rigg. Our practice moved to 542 West Second Avenue in 1981.

Over the years, Ophthalmic Associates offered satellite clinics in Kodiak, Cordova, Wasilla, and Homer. Dr. Richardson continued an active clinical glaucoma practice while simultaneously teaching, producing one of the first electronic medical record systems, and consulting at Baylor University in Houston, Texas. Many fine doctors have worked with O.A. in subsequent years and have made significant contributions to our success.

Our Culture

Dr Carl Rosen, M.D.

Dr. Rosen joined Ophthalmic Associates in 1994. He was Alaska’s first and remains the only board-certified, fellowship-trained orbital and oculoplastic surgeon, as well as the only board-certified, fellowship-trained neuro-ophthalmologist. Dr. Rosen employs his skill and extensive experience to work on a range of patients, including those who have encountered severe trauma. Dr. Rosen has published numerous articles in major medical journals including a book chapter on Graves’ Orbitopathy. He has also received an award for his research on Graves’ Orbitopathy. Dr. Rosen is an inductee to the American Society for Oculoplastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (ASOPRS), the most prestigious international oculoplastic society. He was also the president of the Alaska Ophthalmology Society, as well as past president of the Alaska State Medical Association. Dr. Rosen is married and has seven children. He is a Gracie Barra Black Belt (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu).

Dr Elizabeth Morgan, M.D.

Cataract Surgery, Glaucoma. Dr. Morgan joined Ophthalmic Associates in 2003. She specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of cataracts and glaucoma. Dr. Morgan also serves as the acting chief of ophthalmology at Providence Medical Center. Dr. Morgan spent her childhood in Asheville, NC. She moved west to complete her B.A. at the University of California, Berkeley, where she graduated with honors. Dr. Morgan received her M.D. from The University of California, San Francisco and pursued post-graduate training at the University of Washington, where she devoted two years to basic science research and two years to surgical residency. She completed her ophthalmology training at the Storm Eye Institute and went on to complete a fellowship in glaucoma at Swedish Medical Center with Dr. Murray Johnstone and Dr. Richard Mills. Dr. Morgan’s research interests include the molecular mechanisms mediating the inflammatory reaction to surgery.

Dr Kelly Lorenz, M.D.

Dr. Kelly Lorenz is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in glaucoma and cataract surgery. She received her B.S., cum laude, from Wake Forest University in North Carolina, and received her M.D., cum laude, from The Ohio State University. Dr. Lorenz completed her Ophthalmology residency and glaucoma fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. Dr. Lorenz became board certified and a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 2012. She worked in Los Angeles for two years before moving to Alaska. She practiced at the Alaska Native Medical Center for three years, where she acted as the Medical Director of Ophthalmology and was awarded Employee of the Year in 2014. Prior to her career as an ophthalmologist, Dr. Lorenz worked in cytogenetic technology, as well as clinical oncology research, specializing in the science of nutrition and cancer prevention. Dr. Lorenz carries her interest in nutrition and disease prevention into her current practice.

Dr Eileen Myers, M.D.

Dr. Eileen Myers is a board-certified ophthalmologist who cares for a broad range of diseases including cataracts, glaucoma and lid disorders. She is also the only provider of corneal cross linking in Alaska that uses both FDA approved equipment and FDA approved techniques. She completed her B.S. at Baylor University and her M.D. at Brown University. She went on to complete an internship and facial microsurgery course at Indiana University and ophthalmology residency at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Myers was born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska. She spent two and a half years in private practice in Oregon before moving to Jamaica with a medical mission organization. She and her family served in Jamaica for two years where she served as Director of Ophthalmology and Director of the Surgery Center. During that time, she completed additional training in anterior segment surgery including complex cataracts, iris reconstruction, and pterygium removal.

Dr Julia Shatten, M.D.

Dr. Shatten is a Board-Certified Ophthalmologist specializing in Cornea transplantation (DMEK, DSEK, Boston Keratoprosthesis Type I, and Penetrating Keratoplasty), Corneal Cross-Linking, External Disease, Cataract and Complex Cataract Surgery and Iris Repair. Dr. Shatten grew up in Cleveland, Ohio and graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Prior to pursuing a career in medicine, she taught middle school science in St. Louis, Missouri where she earned her Masters in Education from the University of Missouri. She completed her post baccalaureate work at Washington University in St. Louis where she did basic science research. She then spent a year as a research fellow in Boston at the Berenson- Allen Center for Noninvasive Brain Stimulation. She received her MD from the University of Vermont as a Schweitzer Fellow and stayed at UVM for her intern year in medicine. She completed ophthalmology residency at UPMC in Pittsburgh.
