The first Mountain Mike’s Pizza restaurant opened in 1978 in San Jose, California. Former veterans of the Round Table Pizza and Shakey’s Pizza franchise systems started the chain. The Mountain Mike’s chain is comprised over 160 restaurants, located primarily in northern and central California. Mountain Mike’s has corporate offices in Oakland, California.

Quality Franchise Systems, Inc. purchased the brand and rights from the original franchisor in 1991. Quality Franchise Systems, Inc. implemented many projects to improve the quality and conformity of the chain, including developing programs to improve unit-level profitability; rewriting the operations manual; restructuring the training program for new franchise owners; developing a franchise service team and quality control program; and establishing a national distribution program, among others.

The pizza industry continues to be a growing segment, whereas many other food industries are experiencing a decline in sales. With many other major restaurant chains struggling with the downturn in the economy over the past years, customers are turning to lower priced venues like Mountain Mike's Pizza where the dining dollar can go farther in feeding the family in a relaxed family friendly environment.
