The mission of Grace Smith House, Inc is to enable individuals and their children to live free from domestic violence through: providing shelter and apartments, advocacy, counseling, and education; raising the consciousness of the community regarding the extent, type and seriousness of domestic violence; and initiating and taking positions on public policies in order to provide options which empower victims of domestic violence.

In pursuit of our mission to support individuals and children in their efforts to live free from domestic violence, the agency’s philosophical underpinnings must be embedded in every aspect of our work. This includes being thoughtful about verbal and nonverbal communication, believing what survivors have to say, and diligently practicing strength-based advocacy, role modeling openness and nonviolent conflict resolution, and placing the concept of “empowerment” at the center of all our services. The overarching emphasis informing every worker’s job performance must be to place the needs of the individuals and children we serve first.
