Job Description

About the Practice

Whole Picture Health & Vision is a boutique private practice in Ithaca, NY offering full-scope care with a focuse on primary eyecare, neuro-optometric rehab, pediatrics, specialty contact lenses and ocular disease. WPHV began serving Ithaca and the surrounding region 50 years ago as the practice of Larry Wallace OD, PhD. Our motto is, “See the whole picture, treat the whole person.”  We are not a high volume practice and we go the extra mile to provide outstanding care to our patients and excellent quality of life to our doctors and staff.

We are looking for a personable and patient-focused optometrist to join the Whole Picture team.

About the Location

Ithaca, NY is a college town located on the southern shore of Cayuga Lake that is home to Cornell University and Ithaca College. “Ithaca is Gorges...” It is also a magical place to live and grow due to the booming local economy and extremely educated, liberal population. The locals often describe Ithaca as, “10 square miles surrounded by reality.” As an academic stronghold in Upstate New York, Ithaca provides all of the benefits of a larger urban area (tons of restaurants, cultural experiences, social interactions, activity groups, sports and economic opportunities) while retaining a small town feel. Cornell’s luxury Campus-to-Campus Bus service seamlessly connects Ithaca to New York City and makes travel a breeze.

Ithaca is consistently rated as one of the best places to live in the country. For young optometrists, there are ample opportunities to mix and mingle with brilliant graduate students and professors in your age range. For doctors with children, Ithaca is an ideal place to raise a family. For middle and retirement-aged citizens, Ithaca offers all of the amenities of a large metropolis without the NYC price tag or the necessity of driving. For outdoor enthusiasts, Ithaca offers unparalleled access to trail running, swimming, fishing, hunting, camping and the most scenic hikes in NY State. We also enjoy the benefit of living in Finger Lakes Wine Country, with over 100 wineries and several more local cideries, distilleries, and breweries. In short, if you like it, Ithaca has it.

About the Optometrist Position

Whole Picture prides ourselves on maintaining the highest professional standards and offering our patients an individualized experience that they can get nowhere else. The ideal candidate will be a patient-focused clinician with a strong customer focus and an interest in collaborating across medical specialties.

As an optometrist in our practice, your duties will include the following:

  • Perform comprehensive eye exams
  • Conduct binocular vision evaluations (if applicable)
  • Prescribe corrective lenses
  • Collaborate with other optometrists, therapists and support staff
  • Promote healthy vision by counseling and educating patients
  • Conduct community outreach at local schools, colleges and universities
  • Maintain detailed electronic patient records
  • Work towards practice growth initiatives in Ithaca and beyond
  • Become the best doctor you can be through continuing education, specialization and professional networking

Optometrist Job Requirements & Qualifications

  • Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree
  • Valid NY state license to practice optometry
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a diverse patient population
  • Customer-service orientation with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Willingness to go the extra mile for any patient
  • Interest in binocular vision is a plus but not required - we encourage specialization but are happy to support any professional interest: vision therapy, pediatrics, specialty contact lenses, ocular disease, etc.

Why You’ll Love This Opportunity

  • Lifestyle! - We work Monday-Friday from 9am-5pm. You will never work a weekend or evening hour unless you choose to do so. We are willing to accommodate three day or four day work schedules as well.
  • Ithaca!
  • Reasonable patient volume - our doctors work only through medical insurance (no vision insurance) and provide the highest level of care.  We focus on efficiency and recurring revenue rather than patient volume, which translates to a better quality of life for our doctors and staff.
  • Excellent Company Culture - our office is well-established but ownership is young and growth-motivated. Our team is small and highly collaborative with a culture that emphasizes professionalism and respect for one another.  We consistently invest not just in top tier ophthalmic equipment, but in our staff and doctors, which are our most important asset.  Fostering a supportive and low-stress work environment is as important as providing the best possible care to our patients.
