Shelter Veterinarian – Shelter Medicine & Spay/Neuter Clinic
At the Martinsville-Henry County SPCA, every day is about second chances. For over 50 years, we have been a cornerstone of animal welfare in our community, and with the opening of the Louise R. Lester Spay/Neuter Clinic in the Fall of 2021, our impact has grown even stronger. We are seeking a dedicated, compassionate Veterinarian to help lead that mission by providing veterinary care to shelter animals as well as running our spay/neuter clinic. From surgery to wellness care to making compassionate end-of-life decisions, your work will have an immediate and meaningful impact.
From surgery and preventative care to helping animals recover, heal, and find homes, you will play a central role in improving the lives of both animals and the people who love them. We are looking for someone who believes veterinary care should be accessible, collaborative, and rooted in compassion.
You will be supported by an experienced and team-oriented staff and equipped with updated medical resources, including:
- Digital radiography
- Dental radiography
- Human-grade ultrasound
- In-house blood analyzers
- Fully outfitted dental cart
This role offers the opportunity to practice a wide range of shelter and surgical medicine while working in an organization that values quality care, teamwork, and humane decision-making. We do not euthanize for space.
Compensation & Benefits
- Starting salary of $120,000+
- Sign-on bonus
- Relocation assistance
- Primarily Monday–Thursday schedule with limited Saturdays
- 15 days PTO in addition to 6 major holidays
- Stipend for use towards health insurance reimbursement, licensing and professional fees, CE, or other as desired by Veterinarian

Key Responsibilities
- Perform spay and neuter surgeries for all shelter animals as well as public animals through our spay/neuter clinic with an estimated 10-12 surgeries per day pending daily needs and scheduling
- Perform other surgical procedures, including dentals
- Oversee medical care and treatment plans for shelter animals
- Develop and manage shelter medicine and disease prevention protocols
- Work collaboratively with staff to ensure timely, appropriate care
- Maintain accurate medical records in Shelterluv and Idexx Neo
- Communicate with fosters, adopters, and volunteers regarding animal health
- Participate in community wellness and outreach clinics
- Perform medical and behavioral euthanasia as deemed necessary for shelter animals as well as public animals. We do not euthanize for space
Qualifications
- DVM or equivalent veterinary degree
- Current Virginia veterinary license (or ability to obtain)
- DEA license or ability to obtain
- Valid driver’s license
