Senior Project Accountant

Position Summary

The Senior Project Accountant is responsible for the financial management and accounting of development and construction projects from pre-development through project stabilization. This role works closely with development, construction, and finance teams to monitor project budgets, track costs, ensure accurate financial reporting, and support lender and investor reporting requirements.

The ideal candidate has construction or real estate development accounting experience, a detailed understanding of job cost accounting, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Key Responsibilities

Maintain and manage accounting for multiple development and construction projects.

Monitor project budgets, commitments, and job cost reports to ensure accurate tracking of project performance.

Prepare and analyze monthly project financial statements and variance reports.

Prepare construction draw packages and track related equity contributions and loan funding activities.

Coordinate with project managers to ensure proper coding and approval of invoices and pay applications.

Collect and review subcontractor lien waivers and compliance documentation using company software.

Monitor committed costs, change orders, and contingency usage.

Perform monthly close for assigned projects including reconciliations and accruals, ensuring compliance with GAAP and company accounting policies.

Partner with development managers, project managers, and construction teams to ensure financial accuracy.

Support project forecasting, budget updates, and financial analysis.

Assist with system improvements and accounting process enhancements.

Qualifications

Education

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.

Experience

4+ years of accounting experience, preferably in:

Real estate development

Construction accounting

Multifamily or commercial real estate

Skills & Knowledge

Strong understanding of construction job cost accounting.

Familiarity with construction loan draw processes.

Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., Entrata, Yardi, MRI, or similar).

Advanced Excel skills.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
