What You'll Do:
This position works under general direction of the institutional Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and may be required to work at more than one institution.
- Monitors progress of and intervene in the course of chronic illnesses, using the DRC policies and protocols for guidance
- Inoculates or vaccinates against communicable diseases & prescribe medications or administer treatment of acute and chronically ill patients & performs minor surgery as training & competency allows
- Performs routine physical exams of patients to determine control or status of chronic conditions & diagnose new conditions
- Evaluates patients for the necessity of specialty referral consultations inside or outside the institution & reviews said consult reports for the recommendations, approving or disapproving accordingly
- Orders & reviews the results of laboratory, x-ray, & other diagnostic testing as appropriate
- Facilitates, with the CMO, the completion of medical reclassification & requests for non-formulary medications as necessary
- Performs routine & emergency medical care of inmate patients as scheduled
- Examines, diagnoses & treats patients within scope of practice, as identified by the State of Ohio Nursing Board as applicable
- Conducts rounds on infirmary patients as deemed appropriate by the CMO
- Writes up medical information gathered during patient interviews according to DRC Bureau of Medical Services guidelines, policies, protocols & related ACA standards currently in practice, documenting all assessments & diagnostic impressions, as well as any other treatment plans & follow-up parameters
- Cooperates with CMO medical quality oversight & accept suggestions, redirection, and guidance
- Attends professional institutional-specific meetings as requested by the Warden, Deputy Warden, or CMO
- Attends the monthly institution medical Continuous Quality Improvement meetings as an active participant
- Attends statewide Medical Leadership Quarterly meetings as directed by the CMO
- Takes outpatient call as directed by the CMO, after approval by the BOMS State Medical Director
Valid license as Registered Nurse; completion of Nurse Practitioner program & certified by Ohio Board of Nursing for advanced practice with valid certificate of authority & certificate to prescribe in accordance with ORC 4723.
