Our client, a well-established, nationally recognized organization is seeking a highly experienced Senior Payroll Tax Consultant with the ability to drive issues to resolution quickly for an urgent, short-term contract engagement. This role will focus on resolving complex, multi-jurisdictional payroll tax challenges resulting from a recent corporate separation. The consultant will be responsible for establishing compliant statutory tax accounts under a newly formed EIN, addressing legacy unemployment and withholding tax issues, and working directly with state and local tax authorities to bring all jurisdictions into full compliance.
Job Title: Senior Payroll Tax Consultant
Location: Remote
Pay Rate: $65+/hour (W2, based on experience)
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the expedited setup and correction of statutory payroll tax accounts, including SIT, SUI, city, and local taxes, across all jurisdictions where the organization has nexus or mandatory withholding requirements.
- Resolve complex SUI account ownership and transfer issues related to an EIN transition following a corporate split, including direct communication with state agencies.
- Serve as the primary escalation point with state and local tax authorities to address rejected filings, conflicting account numbers, penalties, notices, and erroneous fines.
- Investigate and remediate legacy tax exposure associated with a repurposed EIN, ensuring accurate registrations, filings, and reconciliations moving forward.
- Pursue recovery or proper reallocation of payroll tax funds held in legacy accounts where feasible, while documenting outcomes and stabilizing compliance processes.
- Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- Minimum of 7 years of related experience.
- Extensive hands-on experience resolving complex payroll tax, unemployment insurance, and statutory withholding issues across multiple U.S. jurisdictions.
- Demonstrated success working directly with state and local tax agencies to resolve disputed accounts, filings rejections, penalties, and compliance roadblocks.
- Ability to engage immediately and work independently in a fast-paced environment.
