Job Summary
The Heavy Equipment Training Supervisor is a fully remote position at a solar company, leading a team of 4-6 onsite OQ (Operator Qualification) evaluators/trainers responsible for delivering hands-on training and performing Operator Qualification evaluations for heavy equipment operators on construction sites. These evaluators/trainers ensure personnel are qualified to perform covered tasks involving heavy equipment operation (e.g., excavation, grading, material handling) in compliance with OSHA regulations, company standards, and safety protocols. The role focuses on maintaining a qualified workforce, upholding OQ program integrity, developing evaluator capabilities, and driving continuous improvement in qualification outcomes. The position requires approximately 75% travel to visit construction sites, observe evaluations and training sessions, provide direct coaching, and support evaluators/trainers in the field. As needed, the Heavy Equipment Training Supervisor may also facilitate classes, workshops, or qualification sessions directly to support program delivery, fill gaps, or model best practices. The Supervisor reports to [e.g., Training Manager / Director of Safety & Compliance / Operations Leadership] and aligns OQ efforts with company objectives while working independently from a home office.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and Lead Direct Reports:
- Directly manage 4-6 onsite OQ evaluators/trainers remotely, including hiring, onboarding, performance management, coaching, mentoring, discipline, and career development.
- Hold regular virtual one-on-one meetings, conduct performance reviews, and set individual/team goals focused on key metrics, such as evaluation completion rates, qualification compliance, and incident reduction.
- Build and maintain a motivated, high-performing remote/field-based team culture.
- Field Oversight and Travel (75% Travel Required):
- Travel up to 75% of the time (including overnight stays) to various construction sites nationwide/internationally as needed to observe evaluators/trainers conducting OQ evaluations and training sessions on heavy equipment operations.
- Deliver real-time, in-person coaching, constructive feedback, and hands-on support during onsite visits.
- Verify adherence to company OQ protocols, DOT/PHMSA regulations (49 CFR 192/195), evaluation methodologies, safety standards, best practices, and compliance requirements in the field.
- OQ Program and Training Management:
- Oversee the implementation, updating, delivery, and refinement of the company's OQ program, including covered task lists, training curricula, and qualification processes for heavy equipment operators.
- Perform needs assessments via input from evaluators, personnel, stakeholders, and performance data, addressing gaps in knowledge, skills, abilities, or abnormal operating condition recognition.
- Coordinate remote scheduling, evaluator/trainer assignments, and logistics to optimize coverage and efficiency across dispersed construction sites.
- Facilitate classes, workshops, or OQ evaluation sessions directly as required (e.g., to pilot new covered task modules, cover for team members, demonstrate evaluation techniques, or address urgent compliance needs).
- Quality Assurance and Evaluation:
- Evaluate the effectiveness of OQ programs and individual evaluator/trainer performance through field observations, assessments, practical demonstrations, and key metrics (e.g., qualification pass rates, on-the-job application, compliance audit results).
- Perform quality audits of evaluations, training sessions, and documentation to ensure standardization and full compliance with OSHA requirements and company standards.
- Identify improvement opportunities in processes, evaluation methods, or covered tasks and collaborate on revisions.
- Evaluator/Trainer Development:
- Create and execute continuous development plans for OQ evaluators/trainers, including virtual workshops, certifications, skill enhancement (e.g., evaluation best practices), and peer sharing sessions.
- Act as a remote mentor and expert resource, promoting best practices in adult learning, performance evaluation techniques, and effective qualification delivery for heavy equipment operations.
- Occasionally facilitate or co-facilitate training classes or evaluator sessions to model effective instruction, provide hands-on examples, or support team skill-building.
- Reporting and Administration:
- Monitor and report on OQ KPIs, program results (e.g., qualification compliance rates, reduced incidents), evaluator performance, and travel activities using remote tools and dashboards.
- Maintain accurate digital records of evaluations, qualifications, certifications, training sessions, and compliance documentation.
- Prepare and present periodic reports/updates to leadership on OQ program status, achievements, challenges, and proposed solutions.
- General Supervisory Duties:
- Enforce company policies, safety guidelines, OSHA regulations, and OQ standards across the remote/field team.
- Manage team-related resources such as evaluation tools, training materials, and development expenses (as applicable).
- Handle escalated field issues related to OQ evaluations, personnel qualification, or operational concerns.
- Partner cross-functionally (e.g., with HR, operations, safety, compliance) to support broader business goals, including regulatory audits and workforce safety.
- Lead or contribute to OQ-related projects and organizational initiatives.
- Facilitate classes or deliver targeted training/evaluation sessions when necessary to ensure program continuity, demonstrate leadership in OQ excellence, or respond to specific business demands.
