This faculty position provides leadership for developing and implementing a comprehensive and balanced teaching and applied research agenda program in Small Ruminant & Meat Science in the Department of Extension in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences at The Ohio State University with a 25% teaching appointment in the Department of Animal Sciences. Working collaboratively with a team of OSU professionals within OSU Extension as well as with cross-disciplinary department and colleges, the faculty member functions as a consultant with clientele to address statewide issues as expertise is needed; provides unbiased research-based alternatives; evaluates and responds to large scale statewide needs vs. individual requests; and secures resources (grants, contracts, user fees) to focus on these issues. Workforce development will be integrated into programming. For the identified area of expertise, the field specialist determines issues and needs, conducts unbiased applied research, and targets programming and resources across the state, in collaboration with OSU professionals and stakeholders. The faculty member will hold a joint appointment, but may seek courtesy faculty status within appropriate department(s) to maintain an integrated connections across the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences.
Performance Objectives
Plan, teach, and evaluate educational programs including development of relevant curricula; conduct applied research; make creative and scholarly contributions, and contribute in service to the profession and university in the small ruminant production and meat science. Employ innovative educational methods and technology to expand delivery of educational programs and resources to Extension professionals, organizations, farmers, livestock producers and the general public. Serve in a teaching role in the Department of Animal Sciences, focusing on education, including classroom teaching with up to six (6) credits annually based on expertise and department needs. Secure extramural funding that may include grants, contracts, industry supported partnerships, user fees, and cost recovery to support mission critical programming. Document and communicate program impacts to both departments. Conduct applied research; translate and integrate applied research into curriculum and educational programs; publish in clientele media outlets; meet faculty expectations of creative and scholarly work. Collaborate with academic department faculty on research agendas. Advance workforce development by engaging youth and college students in experiential learning, career exploration, and skillabuilding opportunities that prepare the next generation of leaders in animal sciences. Pursue professional developmental opportunities aligned with individual professional development goals and selected subject matter areas. Be an effective team player. Work collaboratively with educators in all program areas (4-H Youth Development, Agriculture and Natural Resources, Community Development, and Family and Consumer Sciences), where interdisciplinary efforts are needed to meet broad issues or carry out major programming efforts. Coordinate Extension, research, and service activities at the state level as an active, engaged member of livestock teams and affiliate member of the Farm Financial Management and Policy Institute. Participate in related teams within Agriculture and Natural Resources.
Required :
- Ph.D. in animal sciences, livestock production, economics, agricultural and/or Extension education, education, or a related field.
- Experience working in a university setting, including experience leading and managing teams.
- Candidate must demonstrate success in working as part of a team and in initiating collaborative partnerships.
- Leadership ability, and strong teaching, and subject matter expertise in animal sciences.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a willingness and ability to work closely with diverse groups of academic (e.g., students, staff, faculty) and practitioner audiences.
- Qualifies for the rank of Associate Professor or Professor with tenure in the Department of Extension.
Desired :
- Experience or deep knowledge of the land grant university system.
- Understanding or experience within food, agriculture, or natural resources systems.
- A record of documented experience in producing research related to animal sciences, sheep production, or a closely related field
Tenure faculty (regardless of rank) - persons with the titles of professor, associate professor, assistant professor and instructor who serve on appointments totaling 50% or more service to the university and who are eligible for tenure or who have obtained tenure. Duties and responsibilities are assigned in accordance with the workload guidelines laid out in the pattern of administration of each faculty members tenure initiation unit (TIU) and, as appropriate, regional campus; obligations will include research, service and/or teaching or clinical practice. These faculty will have earned doctorate or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study or possession of equivalent experience.
