Job Description

Telecom Solutions Engineer / Project Engineer

Charleston WV (On-Site)
Advantage.Tech

About Advantage.Tech

Advantage.Tech is a 20+ year established IT and infrastructure company operating across West Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic.

We design and deploy real-world technology systems — including network infrastructure, structured cabling, telecom, and security — for organizations that depend on uptime and performance.

We are not a “sell it and figure it out later” company.

We expect our engineers to:

  • Think through real-world installation challenges before a job is sold
  • Take ownership of their work from design through execution
  • Build solutions that work in the field — not just on paper

Our team includes experienced engineers, project managers, and field crews who move fast and expect clarity, accuracy, and accountability.

If you like solving real problems and taking ownership of outcomes, you’ll fit here.

If you prefer passing work downstream and figuring it out later, you won’t.

Build It Right the First Time. Own the Scope. Protect the Margin.

Advantage.Tech is hiring a Telecom Solutions Engineer / Project Engineer to lead the design, scoping, and technical ownership of structured cabling, network infrastructure, and telecom projects.

This is not a passive pre-sales role.

This is a hands-on, field-aware engineering position responsible for making sure every job is:

  • Scoped correctly
  • Priced correctly
  • Executed without surprises

If you’ve ever walked onto a job and said “whoever scoped this missed half the work” — this role is for you.

What You’ll Do

Pre-Sales Engineering & Scoping (Primary Responsibility)

  • Perform site walks and field assessments for cabling and network projects
  • Design complete and accurate scopes of work (no gaps, no assumptions)
  • Build Bills of Materials (BOMs) for structured cabling, network, and telecom systems
  • Identify real-world constraints (pathways, labor challenges, access issues, materials)
  • Work directly with sales to ensure solutions are technically sound and profitable

Project Engineering & Ownership

  • Own the technical integrity of projects from sale through execution
  • Partner with Project Managers and field teams to ensure clean handoffs
  • Stay involved to prevent scope creep and missed requirements
  • Validate that what was sold can actually be built — efficiently

Estimation & Profit Protection

  • Accurately estimate:
    • Labor (this is critical)
    • Materials
    • Time and complexity
  • Catch risks early:
    • Incomplete pathways
    • Power requirements
    • Mounting challenges
    • Code/compliance issues
  • Ensure projects are designed to hit margin targets — not just win deals

Project Involvement & Technical Ownership

  • This role is not a traditional Project Manager position, but it does require ownership beyond the sale.

  • Stay engaged after project kickoff to ensure the scope is executed as designed
  • Partner with Project Managers to validate timelines, materials, and labor assumptions
  • Act as the technical authority when questions or issues arise in the field
  • Identify and resolve scope gaps before they become change orders
  • Support field teams when real-world conditions differ from the original design
  • You are not responsible for day-to-day project administration, but you are responsible for making sure what was sold can be successfully delivered.

What Success Looks Like (First 90 Days)

  • Fewer change orders caused by missed scope
  • Cleaner project handoffs with minimal confusion
  • Improved gross margin on cabling/telco jobs
  • Field teams stop saying: “this wasn’t scoped right”

Required Experience

  • 5+ years in structured cabling, telecom, or network infrastructure projects
  • Proven experience scoping:
    • Structured cabling (Cat6, fiber, pathways)
    • IDF/MDF builds
    • Network deployments
    • Low-voltage systems
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Real-world installation challenges (not just theory)
    • Labor estimation for cabling environments
  • Experience building accurate BOMs and scopes of work

This Role Is NOT For You If:

  • You’ve only done remote pre-sales and never walked real job sites
  • You rely on others to figure out the details after the sale
  • You’ve never been accountable for job profitability
  • You miss things and blame the field team

Compensation

  • Base salary + performance incentives tied to:
    • Project accuracy
    • Margin performance
    • Reduction in change orders

Why This Role Matters at Advantage.Tech

We are growing fast — and we do a high volume of network, telecom, and structured cabling projects.

When scoping is done right:

  • Projects run smoothly
  • Margins are strong
  • Teams win

When it’s done wrong:

  • We lose time
  • We lose money
  • We lose trust

This role exists to make sure that never happens.
