This position is 24 hours per week and on-site.
The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) provides high-quality, evidence-based psychiatric care to incarcerated individuals, including mental health assessments, diagnosis, treatment planning, and psychotropic medication management. Working within a correctional healthcare setting, the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) collaborates with an interdisciplinary care team to ensure comprehensive mental health treatment and continuity of care. This role plays a critical part in addressing the unique mental health needs of the incarcerated population while ensuring compliance with facility protocols, legal regulations, and ethical standards.
How YOU can Make an Impact:
Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and risk screenings to diagnose mental health conditions and determine appropriate levels of care.
Develop, implement, and manage individualized treatment plans for patients with mental health and co-occurring disorders.
Prescribe and manage psychotropic medications in accordance with evidence-based guidelines, clinical protocols, and collaborative care practices.
Provide crisis intervention and support for patients experiencing acute psychiatric episodes, including suicidal ideation or self-harm risks.
Collaborate closely with behavioral health staff, medical providers, and custody to support integrated care and ensure safety, continuity, and quality of services.
Participate in mental health multidisciplinary team meetings, treatment planning conferences, and case reviews.
Document promptly and properly.
Maintain strict adherence to confidentiality requirements, HIPAA regulations, and ethical principles.
Educate patients on their mental health diagnoses, treatment options, and medication compliance; promote patient engagement in their own care.
Support professional development of other healthcare professionals by providing consultation, mentorship, and clinical guidance on psychiatric conditions and care approaches.
Participate in Call-by-Phone rotation for psychiatric coverage, including after-hours support when necessary.
Promote a trauma-informed, recovery-oriented, and culturally competent approach to mental health care.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives related to psychiatric care, mental health documentation, and outcomes monitoring.
Maintain professional licensure and certifications and participate in continuing education to remain current in psychiatric and correctional healthcare practices.
Follow all facility policies regarding safety, infection control, security, and emergency response.
What we Ask of YOU:
Active and unrestricted license to practice as an APRN in the State of California.
Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program with a concentration in Psychiatry & Mental Health.
A active and unrestricted DEA Registration or be willing to obtain registration.
Board Certification in a Psychiatric/Mental Health discipline by a nationally recognized certifying body (e.g., ANCC).
Experience with correctional healthcare or other settings with underserved cohorts is very helpful.
Must hold Active CPR/BLS certification required (American Heart Association or American Red Cross guidelines) prior to Start Date.
Working knowledge of HIPAA, mental health standards of care, and applicable federal and state behavioral health regulations.
Experience using Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) is helpful; and must be able to document promptly and properly.
