Job Summary
Job Description
The Overnight Veterinary Surgical Technician is responsible for providing advanced nursing care to hospitalized surgical and post-operative patients during overnight hours in a surgical specialty–only hospital. This position focuses on anesthesia recovery, intensive physiologic monitoring, pain management, and early recognition of complications in high-acuity surgical cases. The technician functions with a high degree of autonomy while adhering to established hospital protocols and maintaining clear communication with attending surgeons and the daytime team to ensure continuity of care.
Primary responsibilities include delivering comprehensive overnight patient assessments, closely monitoring anesthesia recoveries and post-operative patients, and responding appropriately to changes in patient status. The technician is expected to recognize subtle clinical changes, implement interventions within established protocols, and escalate concerns to the attending surgeon when indicated. Typical overnight caseload consists of one to five hospitalized surgical patients, allowing focused, attentive care in a controlled specialty environment without walk-in or emergency triage responsibilities.
Technical responsibilities include placement and maintenance of peripheral intravenous catheters, central venous lines, arterial lines, and urinary catheters. The technician manages fluid therapy, continuous rate infusions (CRIs), transfusion therapy, oxygen delivery systems, and advanced monitoring equipment. Additional duties include performing in-house laboratory diagnostics, evaluating diagnostic trends, obtaining diagnostic imaging as directed, and ensuring thorough, accurate electronic medical record documentation. Detailed overnight treatment notes and structured patient handoffs to the daytime team are essential components of the role.
The Overnight Veterinary Surgical Technician is expected to maintain a clean, organized, and low-stress recovery environment while upholding the hospital’s standards for anesthesia, analgesia, and post-operative care. Strong critical thinking skills, sound clinical judgment, and the ability to work independently are required.
Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) credential is preferred. Equivalent experience in specialty, ICU, emergency, or surgical settings will be strongly considered. Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in anesthesia monitoring, advanced catheter placement, infusion management, and critical patient assessment. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential.
This is a salaried position with an annual compensation range of $50,000 to $65,000, commensurate with experience and credentials. The schedule consists of a four-day work week with Saturday, Sunday, and Monday off. Benefits include 50% employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance; paid vacation and sick leave; paid holidays; an annual all-expenses-paid ACVS Continuing Education Conference for RVTs; a uniform stipend; and employee pet care discounts.
The work environment is a surgical specialty-focused hospital with a predictable overnight caseload and an emphasis on structured protocols, autonomy, and high standards of patient care.
