Job Description


We are seeking an experienced Energy Marshal to support electrical start-up, equipment energization, and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) execution on a hyperscale data center project. This role is responsible for managing safe energization activities, coordinating with field crews, and commissioning teams, controlling energy isolation boundaries, and ensuring compliance with all applicable electrical safety standards and project-specific procedures.

Key Responsibilities

Energization / Start-Up Oversight

  • Lead and coordinate electrical energization activities for systems including:
    • Switchgear, MV/LV distribution
    • UPS systems, PDUs, RPPs
    • Panelboards, busway, transformers
    • Generators and paralleling gear (as applicable)
  • Manage energization permits, checklists, and sign-offs per project requirements.
  • Verify equipment readiness before energization (inspection status, torque logs, testing completion, labeling, etc.).
  • Coordinate with Commissioning Agents (CxA), owner reps, GC, and other trades during start-up windows.

Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) Leadership

  • Own and enforce the project’s LOTO program in the field.
  • Create and maintain LOTO plans, including:
    • Energy isolation points
    • Step-by-step switching sequences
    • Verification steps (test before touch)
    • Restoration steps
  • Issue, control, and track LOTO locks/tags and group lock boxes.
  • Ensure all personnel involved understand boundaries, hazards, and safe work conditions.

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with:
    • NFPA 70E
    • OSHA electrical safety standards
    • Site-specific safety and commissioning procedures
    • Client/owner energization protocols (hyperscale standards)
  • Participate in and lead Job Hazard Analyses (JHA) / Pre-Task Plans (PTP) related to energization and start-up.
  • Conduct daily field audits for LOTO, barricading, signage, and energized work boundaries.
  • Confirm required PPE and arc flash controls are properly used.

Documentation & Coordination

  • Maintain accurate documentation including:
    • LOTO logs and registers
    • Energization records and approvals
    • Switching logs
    • Equipment status updates and turnover packages (as required)
  • Support turnover and commissioning documentation readiness.
  • Communicate clearly with:
    • Superintendents and foremen
    • Testing and commissioning teams
    • GC and owner representatives
    • Safety leadership

 

Requirements

 

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in commercial/industrial electrical work, data center experience strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated experience with:
    • Electrical system energization and start-up
    • LOTO program execution and leadership
    • Switching procedures and safe work boundaries
  • Strong understanding of:
    • One-line diagrams and electrical distribution systems
    • Electrical hazards and safe work practices
    • Commissioning sequencing and turnover processes
  • Ability to lead in the field and enforce safety standards with confidence
  • Strong communication and documentation skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience on hyperscale projects (AWS, Google, Microsoft, Meta, etc.)
  • OSHA 30 (or ability to obtain)
  • NFPA 70E training (current preferred)
  • NCCER certification (Electrical or Safety)
  • Experience with medium voltage switching (if applicable to project)
  • Prior foreman, general foreman, or commissioning support background
