Job Description

Interior Designer / Space Planner

Shelby Construction | Design-Build Firm | Luxury Residential & Commercial

Shelby Construction is a high-end design-build firm specializing in luxury residential renovations, additions, custom homes, and select commercial projects throughout Tampa Bay. Founded in 2020, Shelby has grown into an award-winning firm known for architectural integrity, disciplined execution, and an exceptional client experience.

As our in-house design division expands, we are seeking an Interior Designer / Space Planner to join our growing team.

This role is ideal for a designer who understands that great interiors begin with strong space planning and architectural coordination — and who is excited to work in a fully integrated design-build environment.

Position Overview

The Interior Designer will support projects from initial client consultation through construction completion. This role blends space planning, architectural layout development, lighting design, finish selection, and optional interior furnishing/decor services.

You will work directly with clients, architects, and our construction team to ensure that every design decision is both beautiful and buildable.

Core Responsibilities

1. Client Discovery & Vision Development

  • Lead or support client design consultations

  • Translate lifestyle needs into functional design solutions

  • Develop mood boards and concept presentations

  • Guide clients through aesthetic direction and material palettes

2. Space Planning & Layout Development

  • Develop detailed floor plans and interior layouts

  • Optimize spatial flow, storage, and functionality

  • Coordinate kitchen, bath, millwork, and built-in layouts

  • Ensure alignment with architectural intent and construction feasibility

3. Lighting & Interior Systems Design

  • Create lighting plans (decorative and functional)

  • Coordinate electrical layouts with field teams

  • Select plumbing fixtures and specialty hardware

  • Support appliance and equipment integration

4. Material & Finish Selections

  • Curate cohesive finish palettes (tile, flooring, cabinetry, paint, stone, etc.)

  • Balance aesthetics, durability, and budget constraints

  • Maintain organized finish schedules and specification documents

5. Interior Decorating (Optional / Client Add-On)

  • Assist clients with furnishings, styling, and final décor selections

  • Develop furnishing layouts and sourcing plans when applicable

  • Coordinate with vendors and manage procurement timelines

6. 3D Modeling & Visualization

  • Create 3D renderings and visual presentations using Chief Architect or similar software

  • Provide realistic visualizations to support client decision-making

7. Construction Collaboration

  • Work closely with site supervisors and project managers

  • Attend internal production meetings as needed

  • Visit job sites to ensure design intent is executed accurately

  • Address field questions related to design details

8. Documentation & Organization

  • Produce detailed drawings and finish schedules

  • Prepare selection packets for clients and internal teams

  • Maintain organized project files across multiple active projects

9. Budget Awareness

  • Assist with preliminary cost alignment of design decisions

  • Understand how selections impact construction budgets

  • Collaborate with estimating to maintain cost clarity

10. Trend & Product Research

  • Stay current with design trends, materials, and building innovations

  • Continuously elevate Shelby’s design standards

Qualifications

Required:

  • Associate’s Degree (AA) or higher in Interior Design or related field

  • Proficiency in CAD/design software (preferably Chief Architect)

  • Strong space planning skills

  • Ability to manage multiple projects in varying phases

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Knowledge of construction terminology

  • Excellent time management and organization

Preferred:

  • Basic understanding of residential building codes

  • Experience working within a design-build firm or custom home builder

  • Familiarity with luxury residential projects

Additional Requirements

  • Reliable personal transportation for job site visits

  • Ability to travel locally within Tampa Bay

  • Professional presentation when interacting with clients
