Job Description
Senior Controls Engineer
New Jersey | Base Salary: $115,000–$160,000 + 10% Bonus
If you’ve led complex automation projects this is a role where you can actually put that experience to work.
We’re hiring a Senior Controls Engineer to take ownership of design, architecture, and implementation of advanced control systems supporting fulfillment and material handling automation. This is a hands-on engineering role with leadership responsibility inside a controls-focused team.
What You’ll Own
- You will lead the design and programming of machine controls for high-speed sortation systems
- You will architect scalable, modular PLC and HMI solutions aligned to project requirements
- You will oversee hardware selection, I/O mapping, and control logic development across platforms
- You will collaborate cross-functionally with electrical, mechanical, and software engineering teams
- You will mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership through the full project lifecycle
- You will support system emulation, validation testing, and commissioning, including troubleshooting complex system behaviors
- You will drive documentation standards, training materials, and continuous improvement initiatives
What This Role Is and Is Not
This is primarily a controls design engineering position. The majority of your time will be spent designing, programming, and solving technical challenges alongside an experienced internal team.
There is some client interface, but this is not a customer-facing sales engineering role.
When commissioning teams run into issues implementing PLCs, you may be asked to support on site. Travel can be up to 35% or more and limited to domestic projects. There is no international travel.
What You Bring
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field
- 10+ years in controls engineering, ideally within material handling or automation
- Proven experience leading complex automation projects from concept through commissioning
- Advanced proficiency in Allen-Bradley and/or Siemens PLC programming
- Strong SCADA experience, especially Ignition platform development and integration
- Deep understanding of industrial communication protocols and networks such as Ethernet/IP, Profibus, and ProfiNet
- Experience with safety systems, motion control, and robotic integration is a plus
- You should also be comfortable mentoring engineers, managing priorities, and stepping in when projects need senior-level problem solving
