Equipment Operator – Landfill (Local 955)

Utilities Department City of Columbia, Missouri

Job Code: 02303 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Union Affiliation: Local 955 Starting Pay: $23.26 – $25.68 per hour (commensurate with training and experience) Positions Available: 4 Application Deadline: March 10, 2026

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Occasional Saturdays, 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Position Summary

The Equipment Operator performs skilled work operating medium and heavy motorized equipment and commercial vehicles in support of landfill operations. This position contributes directly to safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible solid waste services for the community.

This job description does not imply that these are the only duties to be performed. Employees may be assigned related duties as required.

Essential Functions
  • Operate a wide variety of motorized equipment, including heavy construction equipment and commercial vehicles

  • Utilize hand and power tools safely and effectively

  • Install, operate, repair, and maintain tools and equipment

  • Load and haul materials and supplies

  • Maintain vehicle inventory and properly stock equipment

  • Perform skilled labor tasks following established procedures

  • Maintain a safe work environment and ensure equipment safety

  • Adhere to all safety standards and operational guidelines

  • Document work performed accurately

  • Provide positive and effective customer service

  • Assist other departments as needed

  • Maintain regular attendance

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • 1–3 years of experience in construction or heavy equipment operation

Licenses & Certifications
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)

  • Division-specific CDL endorsements within 6 months of hire

  • Department of Transportation (DOT) medical certification

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of:
  • Standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in trade work

  • Safety standards related to equipment operation and maintenance

  • Columbia geography and streets

Skill in:
  • Operating heavy construction equipment and commercial vehicles

  • Using hand and power tools

  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing

  • Active listening and asking clarifying questions

Ability to:
  • Read and follow written and oral instructions

  • Work independently and as part of a team

  • Maintain accurate records

  • Provide effective customer service

  • Analyze and solve problems

  • Remain focused and work in a constant state of alertness

  • Work on-call and respond at all hours of the day or night

Distinguishing Characteristics

Employees assigned to the Utilities Department must:

  • Maintain a telephone

  • Establish permanent residence within 50 road miles of City Hall (701 E. Broadway, Columbia, MO) within 90 days of hire

Supervision

This position does not have supervisory authority but may provide guidance and training to others.
