Job Description

Position: Optometrist (Myopia Management Specialist)
Location: Bethesda, MD
Company: Treehouse Health, Inc. (dba Treehouse Eyes)
Employment Type: Full-Time Temporary (Initial 3-4 Month Defined-Term Assignment; W-2 Employee)
Reports to: Senior Clinical Director (for clinical collaboration and quality alignment)

About Us:

Treehouse Eyes is an industry pioneer and the largest provider of pediatric myopia management in the country, dedicated exclusively to providing exemplary myopia management care for children.

Founded with a simple purpose – to give children better vision for life – Treehouse Eyes started with its flagship locations in Washington, D.C. and has rapidly expanded by partnering with doctors to offer approximately 60 in-clinic Treehouse Eyes locations across the country.

Treehouse Eyes providers use the Treehouse Vision System®, our proprietary clinical protocol that studies show results in 78% of children showing no progression in the first year of treatment. Utilizing state-of-the-art equipment to develop personalized non-invasive treatment plans, Treehouse Eyes providers have successfully treated thousands of children around the United States.

Position Overview & Clinical Governance:

Treehouse Eyes is seeking a highly skilled and clinically driven Optometrist with specialized expertise in myopia management to join our team. This role is responsible for the comprehensive pediatric eye examinations, diagnosis, treatment planning, and ongoing management of pediatric myopia.

The Optometrist will practice within an evidence-based clinical framework designed to promote consistency, quality, and optimal patient outcomes. While participating in established clinical care pathways and quality initiatives, the Optometrist retains full independent professional judgment in diagnosing, treating, and managing each patient. Nothing in this role restricts the Optometrist’s authority to exercise independent medical decision-making consistent with applicable law and professional standards.

This is a primarily in-person, patient-facing position requiring full on-site participation during scheduled clinical days. Limited remote administrative days may be incorporated as appropriate for documentation, professional development, presentation preparation, and other non-clinical responsibilities.

The Optometrist is expected to maintain high standards of clinical documentation, patient communication, and professional conduct consistent with applicable regulatory and ethical standards.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Clinical Care:
    • Conduct comprehensive pediatric eye examinations with emphasis on myopia diagnosis and progression assessment
    • Perform or oversee diagnostic testing and clinical procedures as appropriate, including pre-examination measurements and advanced diagnostic evaluations, particularly when clinical circumstances or staffing needs require direct physician involvement
    • Develop individualized treatment plans based on clinical findings and professional judgment
    • Interpret diagnostic data, including axial length measurements and corneal topography
    • Provide follow-up care to monitor treatment effectiveness and disease progression
    • Modify treatment plans as clinically indicated
    • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic health record (EHR) system

  • Patient & Family Communication:
    • Educate patients and families on myopia progression and available treatment options
    • Provide clear instructions regarding treatment compliance, contact lens care, and follow-up expectations
    • Ensure patients and families understand long-term monitoring requirements

  • Clinical Collaboration & Quality Alignment:

The Optometrist will actively contribute to a collaborative clinical environment focused on consistency, quality, and continuous improvement in pediatric myopia care.

  • Clinical Collaboration:
    • Collaborate with clinical leadership and peers to support consistent application of evidence-based care standards
    • Participate in peer consultation and case discussions to promote high-quality patient outcomes
  • Maintain current knowledge of pediatric myopia research and evolving clinical best practices through continuing education and professional development activities
  • Contribute to the advancement of clinical standards and best practices within the organization as appropriate to experience and expertise

  • Training & Clinical Integration:
    • Participate in structured onboarding and ongoing training activities designed to support familiarity with practice systems, clinical standards, and quality initiatives
    • Engage in on-site shadowing with other optometrists and clinical team members as part of professional development and integration
    • Participate in periodic peer observation and case collaboration initiatives designed to promote quality improvement and clinical excellence

Clinical observations and feedback are intended to support professional development and quality alignment and do not supersede the Optometrist’s independent professional judgment in pediatric care decisions.

  • Continuing Education & Professional Engagement:
    • Lead or participate in continuing education events, professional webinars, and educational presentations, including preparation of materials and clinical content as needed
    • Collaborate with referring eye care professionals and healthcare providers to ensure coordinated care
    • Support practice growth initiatives through professional and community outreach, educational programs, and relationship-building activities consistent with professional standards

  • Compliance & Confidentiality:
    • Comply with all applicable federal and state privacy and security regulations, including HIPAA requirements
    • Safeguard protected health information (PHI) and maintain strict patient confidentiality
    • Adhere to all practice policies related to documentation, data security, and regulatory compliance

Qualifications:

  • Education & Licensure:
    • Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from an accredited optometry school
  • Active and unrestricted Maryland optometry license required
  • Active Virginia optometry license preferred, including willingness to provide occasional clinical coverage at other regional centers, including Tysons Corner, VA

  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 2 years of clinical optometry experience preferred
    • Experience in myopia management and specialty contact lenses preferred

  • Skills & Attributes:
    • Strong clinical judgment and diagnostic skills
    • Proficiency with advanced diagnostic technology and myopia control technologies
    • Excellent communication and patient education abilities
    • Compassionate, child-centered approach to care
    • Attention to detail and documentation accuracy
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
    • Commitment to continuing education and professional development

  • Employment Requirements:
    • Successful completion of a background screening and verification of credentials may be required prior to employment, in accordance with applicable laws
    • Ongoing eligibility to work in the United States is required

Physical & Safety Requirements:

  • Ability to perform detailed clinical examinations requiring fine motor skills
  • Frequent sitting, standing, and close patient interaction
  • Ability to perform contact lens fittings and operate ophthalmic diagnostic equipment
  • Maintain situational awareness in a pediatric clinical environment
  • Respond appropriately to urgent patient situations
  • Adhere to infection control and clinical safety protocols

Work Schedule & Attendance:

  • Consistent and punctual attendance is an essential function of this position
  • On-site presence is required during scheduled clinical days
  • Limited remote administrative days may be scheduled for non-clinical responsibilities, including documentation review, continuing education preparation, and administrative duties
  • Schedule adjustments may be required based on patient demand, clinical coverage needs, and operational considerations
  • This position is structured as an initial 3-4 month full-time defined-term assignment. Continuation beyond the initial term may occur upon mutual agreement and based on organizational needs. Nothing in this description guarantees employment beyond the defined term.

Essential Job Functions:

The essential functions of this role include in-person pediatric patient evaluation, diagnosis, treatment planning, and follow-up care. These duties require physical presence and cannot be performed remotely without fundamentally altering the nature of this position.

Scope of Practice Flexibility:

Treehouse Eyes continues to evolve to meet patient and community needs. The Optometrist may be expected to provide additional optometric services within the scope of licensure, training, professional competence, and independent clinical judgment as the practice expands its clinical offerings.

Such services may include, but are not limited to, expanded medical eye care, specialty contact lenses, routine eye examinations, or other clinically appropriate services consistent with professional standards and applicable law.

The Optometrist is expected to comply with all applicable federal and state laws, professional regulations, and ethical standards governing the practice of optometry.

Eligibility for employee benefits, if any, will be determined in accordance with applicable law and the terms of the Company’s benefit plans and policies in effect at the time of hire.
