The Psychiatrist in this role will provide comprehensive mental health care to patients in Dauphin County Prison, Harrisburg, PA, for 17 hours per week; and, York County Prison, York, PA, for 23 hours per week. These sites are the local detention centers for their respective counties. Expectations of the Psychiatrist include Initial and Follow-up Psychiatric Evaluations, diagnoses, treatment planning, and medication management for individuals with mental health disorders. This role will collaborate with multidisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure integrated, evidence-based care. The Psychiatrist will also maintain accurate medical records, ensure compliance with regulatory standards, and support the overall mental health program within the facility.
How YOU can Make an Impact:
Provide high-quality, evidence-based Psychiatric care to inmates.
Develop and implement individualized treatment plans for inmates, considering their unique psychological, social, and physical needs. Ensure treatment plans are in line with best practices and updated based on ongoing evaluations.
Medication Management: Prescribe, monitor, and adjust psychotropic medications for inmates as part of their treatment plan.
Conduct thorough psychiatric evaluations, including mental status exams and risk assessments to diagnose mental health conditions and determine the appropriate course of treatment.
Provide psychiatric crisis intervention for inmates experiencing acute mental health episodes or emotional distress.
Offer individual and group psychotherapy sessions, utilizing evidence-based therapeutic modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), or other psychotherapeutic techniques.
Document promptly and properly.
Provide specialized care for inmates with mental health conditions, including those with co-occurring substance use disorders, traumatic brain injuries, or histories of abuse. Address mental health needs of high-risk or vulnerable cohorts.
Conduct regular risk assessments for suicidal ideation, violent behavior, and other potential threats to inmate or staff safety. Make recommendations for safety protocols and initiate involuntary treatment as necessary.
Uphold the highest standards of psychiatric practice, including ensuring informed consent for treatment, respecting patient confidentiality, and adhering to ethical guidelines set forth by psychiatric governing bodies.
Provide expert psychiatric consultation to other healthcare providers and correctional staff regarding mental health management and behavioral issues within the facility.
Quality Improvement and Compliance: Participate in continuous quality improvement (CQI) efforts, including audits, reviews, and feedback to improve patient care and ensure compliance with mental health laws, regulations, and facility standards.
Provide supervision and guidance to psychiatric nurse practitioners, social workers, psychologists, and other behavioral health staff.
Participate in training and educational initiatives for correctional staff, helping them recognize signs of mental illness and understand how to appropriately interact with inmates with mental health issues.
Participate in On-Call by Phone rotation that includes PMHNPs.
Collaborate with correctional officers and facility leadership to ensure psychiatric services are provided in a safe and secure environment, respecting facility protocols and ensuring the well-being of both staff and inmates.
What we Ask of YOU:
A current, valid, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (MD or DO).
Board Eligible or Board Certified in General Psychiatry expected.
Hold (or be willing to obtain) DEA Registration.
Prefer 3-5 years of clinical practice (including Residency/Fellowship rotations), and 1-2 years helping underserved cohorts.
Any experience in Forensic Psychiatry is very helpful.
Active CPR/BLS certificate required prior to start date (American Heart Association/American Red Cross guideline approved).
