The new graduate registered nurse (RN) interprets the philosophy and goals of nursing service to others in the work setting; functions within established guidelines and demonstrates the ability to work effectively and develop therapeutic relationships with patients, their families, and other professional and supportive personnel who provide patient care. The RN delivers fundamental, knowledge-based care to assigned patients while developing technical competencies.

The RN works closely with a preceptor with a goal of developing skills and judgement to utilize the nursing process in real situations. The focus is on individual growth and development in practice with increased levels of self-direction.

The RN in the transition to practice residency program will be enrolled into a 12 -month program that includes hands-on clinical training, classroom training, simulation training, preceptorship, mentorship, and shadowing experiences. The RN is required to attend trainings and learning experiences to successfully complete the program, to facilitate completion additional assignments or alternate experiences may be required.

The Transition to Practice RN is expected to demonstrate proficiency in practice based on conscious, deliberate planning. Self -directed in goal setting for managing complex patient situations (VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G6). registered nurse is a competent nurse who demonstrates competence in practice and decision-making, deliberate planning, and critical thinking skills. This nurse integrates knowledge, skills, abilities, and judgment and is self-directed in goal setting for managing

complex situations. The focus is beyond the self to the evolution of systems thinking by synthesizing knowledge to solve problems that result in demonstrated outcomes. This nurse demonstrates the ability to cope with and manage competing priorities. The competent nurse evaluates others, coaches and mentor's others, and demonstrates leadership skills through collaborative efforts.

Functions and Responsibility but not limited to.

PRACTICE: Knowledge of professional nursing practice and the ability to apply the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation) with close supervision.

LEADERSHIP: Communicates, collaborates, and utilizes leadership principles to perform as an effective member of the interprofessional team.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Incorporates educational resources/opportunities and self-evaluation for professional growth.

EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE/RESEARCH: Awareness of evidence-based practice/research to improve quality of care and resource utilization.

Customer Services Requirements:

The incumbent meets the needs of the Veteran and as appropriate the Veteran's family, caregiver and/or significant other, the Veteran's representative, visitors to VA facilities, all VA staff and other customers while supporting VA missions.

Computer Security Requirement:

The incumbent protects printed and electronic files containing sensitive data in accordance with the provisions of the Privacy Act of 1974 and other applicable laws, Federal regulations, VA statutes and policy, and VHA policy. The incumbent protects the data from unauthorized release or from loss, alteration, or unauthorized deletion.
