A Brief Overview
The Lead Business Intelligence Engineer is a hands-on technical individual contributor embedded within the BI team. This role provides technical leadership and direction for BI engineering, ensuring analytics solutions are scalable, governed, and aligned with enterprise data platforms. This role serves as the primary technical partner to Data Engineering and the escalation point for complex BI architecture decisions. The Lead BI Engineer establishes standards, guides design decisions, and enables BI Developers and Analysts to deliver consistent, high-quality analytics.

What You Will Do

  • Ensure high quality BI pipelines from semantic layers through to downstream products, establishing and enforcing standards for modeling, testing, documentation, and CI/CD.

  • Design, build, and enhance semantic layer content, including shared dbt models and reusable components that support scalable analytics.

  • Provide technical leadership and governance, reviewing BI work, advising on architectural decisions, and partnering closely with Data Engineering to align on data flows and platform patterns.

  • Act as a player coach, contributing hands on to BI engineering work while mentoring and guiding BI Engineers and BI Developers without formal people management responsibilities.

  • Support BI platform strategy, offering technical input on tooling and roadmap decisions and serving as an escalation point for data quality, performance, and modeling issues.

  • Performs other duties as assigned

What You Will Need

  • Bachelor's Degree in analytics, computer science, statistics, or related field Preferred

  • 7-9 years Experience in BI, analytics engineering, or analytics-focused roles Required

  • 7-9 years Developing, troubleshooting, and optimizing advanced SQL logic Required

  • 4-6 years Experience with data visualization tools Required

  • 4-6 years Experience working with Snowflake or similar cloud data warehouses Required

  • 4-6 years Experience leveraging Python for data analysis and pipeline development Required

  • 4-6 years Experience using GitHub for version control and CI/CD Required

  • 1-3 years Hands-on experience with dbt Required

  • 1-3 years Experience with Fivetran Preferred

  • Expert-level SQL proficiency, including advanced query optimization, window functions, CTEs, and complex transformations. (High proficiency)

  • Deep experience with cloud data warehouses (e.g., Snowflake) and transforming data across staging, intermediate, and mart layers. (High proficiency)

  • Advanced proficiency with BI and visualization tools such as Tableau or Power BI. (High proficiency)

  • Strong expertise with dbt, including semantic layer design, shared model development, and testing frameworks. (High proficiency)

  • Ability to define and enforce BI engineering standards, including modeling conventions, documentation, testing, and CI/CD practices. (High proficiency)

  • Architectural judgment for designing scalable, governed BI pipelines, from semantic layers through downstream analytics products. (High proficiency)

  • Hands-on Python skills for data transformation, quality automation, analytical workflows, and developing lightweight BI applications (e.g., Streamlit). (High proficiency)

  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills, especially partnering with Data Engineering to align on data flows and platform patterns. (High proficiency)

  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex data quality, performance, and modeling issues, serving as an escalation point for BI engineering. (High proficiency)

  • Ability to lead through code, including conducting high-quality code reviews, guiding design decisions, and mentoring BI Engineers and Developers. (High proficiency)

Expected Work Location (In Office) : It is expected that you will primarily perform work at the Safelite Home Office (7400 Safelite Way, Columbus, OH 43235). You are required to work in the office at least 4 days a week. Changes to work location arrangements are subject to managerial approval and business needs. #LI-Onsite #LI-JR2
