Description
Lead Casualty and Programs Counsel, North America
Liberty Mutual's North America Legal Team seeks a highly motivated, intellectually curious, and collaborative attorney to support its North America business unit, with specific responsibility for providing legal support to Liberty's Casualty line of business and Programs portfolio across North America. The role spans both admitted and non-admitted (E&S) products and markets. The successful candidate will partner closely with leaders and teams in Casualty, Programs, Product Development, and Product Management to enable profitable growth while mitigating legal risk.
Day-to-day activities will include providing advice on time-sensitive transactions, analyzing and advising on issues related to regulatory compliance across admitted and E&S platforms, supporting Product Development and Product Management on new product development and product maintenance initiatives, counseling clients on product distribution arrangements (including programs), and coordinating across legal teams to solve complex problems. Expertise in domestic insurance regulation is required, and familiarity and experience with commercial insurance products, delegated authority arrangements, and claims handling is preferred. Common sense, great judgment, a broad perspective, a willingness to learn, and a good sense of humor are key to the candidate's success.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as the primary legal advisor to Liberty's North America Casualty line of business and Programs portfolio-spanning admitted and non-admitted (E&S) products and markets-partnering with business leadership, underwriting, product development, product management, and distribution teams.
- Advise on domestic insurance regulatory issues impacting casualty products and programs across admitted and E&S markets, including rate/rule/form considerations for admitted products and surplus lines eligibility, taxes, stamping/filing requirements, and producer/MGA/TPA oversight.
- Structure, draft, and negotiate program-related agreements and distribution arrangements (e.g., MGA, program administrator, TPA, and producer agreements), ensuring alignment with applicable admitted and E&S regulatory requirements and enterprise risk standards.
- Support product filings and related regulatory strategy for admitted products; advise on surplus lines compliance controls and governance for non-admitted offerings.
- Counsel on pre-dispute matters that may impact casualty portfolios; coordinate with litigation colleagues on strategy for significant or litigated matters.
- Monitor and advise on trends affecting casualty lines and programs, including legal system abuse and class/collective actions; translate insights into practical guidance and risk-mitigation recommendations.
- Build and maintain a strong understanding of business clients' objectives, strategic priorities, and the markets in which they operate.
- Collaborate effectively across GRS Legal practice groups (e.g., regulatory, transactional, litigation, privacy, compliance) and with stakeholders in Underwriting, Product, Claims, Distribution, Actuarial, Operations, and Compliance to solve complex problems.
- Prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment; balance responsiveness with thoughtful risk-aware (not risk-averse) counseling.
- Prepare and deliver training for internal clients on relevant legal and regulatory topics and casualty/programs legal trends.
- Stay abreast of changes to insurance regulations, pertinent case law, and emerging industry trends; proactively update stakeholders on material developments.
- Work collaboratively with and take direction from senior members of the team; may assign, direct, and review the work of law clerks and paralegals.
- JD from an accredited law school and admission to at least one U.S. state bar (eligible for inhouse counsel registration as applicable).
- Typically 5+ years' insuranceindustry legal experience (inhouse at a P&C insurer or in private practice representing insurers). Open to candidates with deeper experience for more senior consideration.
- Demonstrated expertise in domestic insurance regulation (P&C), including practical experience across admitted and E&S markets.
- Experience structuring and negotiating delegated authority/MGA/program agreements and advising on claims handling/TPA arrangements preferred.
- Proven experience partnering with Product and Underwriting on new product development and regulatory strategy.
- Strong drafting, negotiation and clientfacing skills; ability to communicate complex legal issues succinctly to executives and nonlawyers.
- Business orientation, sound judgment, responsiveness, and collaborative approach.
