Your Opportunity

Reporting to the Chief Investment Officer (CIO), the Investment Analyst provides analytical and operational support to ensure effective management of the COAERS investment program. You will assist in managing plan assets in accordance with the Investment Policy Statement, including asset allocation support, portfolio monitoring, and manager selection and oversight. You will support performance reporting, financial reporting, operations management, and compliance monitoring. You will also coordinate investment-related policies, procedures, and initiatives, and collaborate with multiple departments to meet information and reporting needs.

Your Main Responsibilities

Reporting, Data Management, and Operations

  • Prepare daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports and data as required.
  • Review monthly investment manager reports and summarize key information for senior staff.
  • Support maintenance and enhancement of performance reporting, including reconciliation and attribution.
  • Effectively use analytics, portfolio management, and accounting tools including Bloomberg and custodial bank platforms.
  • Provide information for legal requests, including public records inquiries.
  • Provide requested information to internal and external auditors to support creation of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) and other reports.
  • Communicate with the custodial bank on a variety of matters, including account opening and closing, corrections and reconciliations.
  • Perform due diligence related to custodial bank services.
  • Assist in identifying and implementing process improvements and removing operational barriers.

Portfolio Monitoring, Market Analysis, Asset Allocation, and Risk

  • Assist with asset allocation, rebalancing, liquidity monitoring, and performance evaluation.
  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative analysis of investment managers, sub-asset classes, and asset class composites.
  • Analyze and evaluate relative risk and return of investment strategies.
  • Assist in oversight, monitoring, and reporting related to external investment managers.
  • Assist in analysis of public and private market asset classes.
  • Assist in data collection, analysis, and screening of investment opportunities.
  • Assist in due diligence for new investment opportunities as requested.
  • Utilize portfolio monitoring software to track activity and positions and report findings.
  • Support risk management processes and analysis.

Communication, Research, and Special Projects

  • Draft detailed investment memoranda.
  • Evaluate and recommend research services and data sources.
  • Assist with or deliver presentations to internal and external interest holders.
  • Support development of improved technological tools and functionality as systems evolve.
  • Complete special projects assigned by senior staff or the Chief Investment Officer.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Strong quantitative analysis and financial modeling skills.
  • Understanding of portfolio construction, performance measurement, and benchmark interpretation.
  • Ability to read financial statements and manager reports.
  • Ability to use investment software, databases, and spreadsheets (e.g., Excel, Bloomberg).
  • Effective at establishing and maintaining working relationships with leadership, staff, external partners, coworkers, and the general public.
  • Strong written and verbal communication.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and proficiency with all Microsoft 365 apps.
  • Able to travel moderately for conferences and onsite due diligence as needed.
  • Institutional investment and/or public pension experience is a plus.

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in business administration, finance, accounting, operations research, mathematics, statistics, business analytics, or a closely related field. Master of Business Administration (MBA) or master’s degree related to finance is a plus. Pursuing the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) or equivalent designation is a plus.

Zero to three years of full-time work experience in investment management, financial analysis, portfolio operations, and/or similar roles. Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the main responsibilities of the position.

Work Location

COAERS offers a hybrid work schedule meaning this position will work in an office environment with opportunities to work remotely. During the initial training period (usually 3 months) the location of the work Monday through Friday is in-person at 4700 Mueller Blvd, Austin TX. After the training period is successfully completed, work is hybrid with three days in-person at 4700 Mueller Blvd, Austin TX and two days per week remote. Work location is subject to change at the supervisor's discretion.
