The Research Laboratory Technician/Specialist supports laboratory operations, experimental research activities, and regulatory compliance for ongoing virology and microbiology projects. This role performs a broad range of molecular, microbiological, and animal research techniques; manages daily laboratory functions; and ensures adherence to institutional and federal safety standards. The position is term (3- 5 year assignment) and part-time, 20 hours per week.
Key Responsibilities Research Execution & Technical Expertise- Perform a wide range of laboratory techniques, including:
- Cell culture maintenance and aseptic technique
- Virus propagation, titration, and detection assays
- Embryo inoculation and monitoring
- DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, RTPCR, and quantitative RTPCR
- Gel electrophoresis, western blotting, cloning, and sequencing
- Conduct experiments with precision and maintain detailed, accurate laboratory records to ensure reproducibility.
- Learn, adapt, and implement new or updated laboratory methodologies as research needs evolve.
- Assist with data processing, organization, and preliminary analysis.
- Assist investigators in conducting animal experiments in accordance with approved IACUC protocols.
- Maintain strict compliance with animal welfare regulations, institutional policies, and federal guidelines.
- Support sample collection (blood, fecal, tissue) and assist in tissue processing, drug inoculation, necropsy procedures, and documentation of clinical observations.
- Maintain accurate logs, procedural notes, and regulatory documentation for all animal studies.
- Participate in project meetings, provide experimental updates, and contribute to preparation of reports.
- Manage daytoday laboratory operations to support efficient workflow and experimental readiness.
- Oversee procurement, inventory, and tracking of equipment, consumables, and reagents.
- Coordinate equipment calibration, maintenance, and repairs with internal services or external vendors.
- Ensure laboratory safety compliance by:
- Coordinating safety training for personnel
- Maintaining and updating IBC and IACUC protocols
- Ensuring proper waste disposal, PPE use, and biosafety practices
- Assist students in the use of laboratory instrumentation.
- Assist in onboarding, training, and mentoring of students, interns, and new personnel in laboratory procedures and safety practices.
- Bachelors degree in microbiology, biology, or a related scientific discipline, or equivalent education and laboratory experience.
- Handson experience with molecular biological and/or microbiological techniques.
- Knowledge of basic laboratory safety practices.
- Knowledge or experience with research animal models, particularly poultry.
- Experience with virology, molecular diagnostics, or microbiology techniques.
- Experience supporting animal research or maintaining compliance with IACUC protocols.
- Familiarity with DNA analysis software, sequencing workflows, or bioinformatics tools.
- Strong organizational and documentation skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research environment.
- Strong understanding of laboratory safety and compliance requirements.
