Position Overview

Memorial Health is seeking an experienced, collaborative, and execution-focused Chief Operating Officer (COO) to provide enterprise-wide operational leadership across hospital, ambulatory, procedural, and support services. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the COO serves as the CEO’s primary operational partner and a key member of the system leadership team. This role is responsible for translating strategy into execution, ensuring consistent performance, and positioning the organization to scale effectively while maintaining quality, culture, and financial strength.

The COO is expected to maintain a strong on-site presence, build trusted relationships across the organization, and actively engage with physicians, employees, community partners, and local stakeholders in support of Memorial Health’s mission and values.

Key Responsibilities

  • Enterprise Operations
    • Provide executive oversight and accountability for system-wide operations, including inpatient, outpatient, ambulatory, surgical, diagnostic, ancillary, and support services.
    • Ensure consistent operational standards, workflows, and performance expectations across all facilities and service lines.
    • Lead initiatives focused on patient flow, access, capacity management, and operational efficiency.
  • Strategic Execution
    • Partner with the CEO and executive leadership team to execute Memorial Health’s strategic plan, including growth initiatives and service line expansion.
    • Translate strategic priorities into actionable operational plans with measurable outcomes.
    • Monitor performance through dashboards, KPIs, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Clinical-Operational Integration
    • Collaborate closely with the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), Chief Medical Officer (CMO), and physician leaders to align clinical excellence with operational performance.
    • Support dyad leadership models and interdisciplinary collaboration.
    • Advance a culture of quality, safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Technology-Enabled Operations
    • Champion the responsible use of data, analytics, automation, and emerging technologies—including artificial intelligence (AI) to improve access, throughput, workforce efficiency, and patient experience.
    • Partner with the Chief Information Officer to ensure technology solutions are operationally integrated, adopted, and sustained.
    • Lead operational change management associated with technology-enabled improvements.
  • Financial & Resource Stewardship
    • Collaborate with the Chief Financial Officer on labor productivity, staffing models, expense management, and capital planning.
    • Ensure operational decisions support Memorial Health’s strong financial performance and long-term sustainability.
    • Oversee operational execution related to capital projects and major system implementations.
  • Leadership & Talent Development
    • Lead, coach, and develop senior operational leaders across the organization.
    • Build leadership bench strength through mentoring, accountability, and succession planning.
    • Foster a growth mindset focused on innovation, adaptability, and disciplined execution.
  • Community & Organizational Leadership
    • Serve as a visible, engaged leader within the organization and the community.
    • Build strong relationships with physicians, employees, and community partners.
    • Represent Memorial Health in community and stakeholder settings as appropriate.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Master’s degree required (MHA, MBA, MPH, or related field preferred).
  • Minimum of 10–15 years of progressive healthcare leadership experience, including senior operational responsibility.
  • Demonstrated success leading complex hospital or health system operations.
  • Strong operational, financial, and analytical acumen.
  • Experience working collaboratively with boards, physicians, and executive leaders.
  • Comfort leading in a technology-enabled healthcare environment.
