Position Summary:
Reporting to the Publisher/Owner and working closely with senior leadership, the Chief Financial Officer is responsible for the overall financial health, stability, and strategic financial leadership of Anchorage Daily News. This role oversees finance, accounting, budgeting, cash management, and select HR related functions, while providing clear financial insight to support operational and strategic decision making across the organization
The primary responsibilities include:
Financial Operations & Reporting
- Oversee all accounting and finance functions, including general ledger, month end and year end close, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
- Prepare and distribute regular financial packages, variance reports, cash reports, and forecasts for the Publisher and leadership team.
- Ensure accuracy and consistency across advertising, circulation, production, HR, and corporate financial reporting.
Cash Management & Revenue Oversight
- Monitor daily cash position and maintain short term and weekly cash forecasts.
- Serve as the primary banking contact and administrator for banking systems, approvals, wires, and ACH activity.
- Oversee accounts receivable, credit policies, collections, write offs, and advertising billing processes in coordination with sales and advertising leadership.
Budgeting, Planning & Compliance
- Lead the annual budgeting process and maintain budget controls throughout the year.
- Coordinate insurance renewals, audits, tax reporting, and required regulatory filings.
- Prepare financial data and schedules for external accountants and advisors.
Team Leadership & Administration
- Supervise the finance team, approve payroll and PTO, and ensure appropriate staffing and coverage.
- Oversee HR administration in coordination with external partners, including payroll, benefits, and compliance.
- Oversee IT operations and system administration, including vendor coordination and access management.
- Maintain and improve financial systems, reporting tools, and internal controls.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on financial leader with strong expertise in accounting, cash management, budgeting, and financial reporting. They are highly detail oriented, comfortable overseeing day to day financial operations, and able to deliver clear, practical financial insights to leaders across the organization. This individual brings sound judgment, discretion, and accountability, works effectively across departments, and has a proven ability to maintain financial discipline while supporting operational needs and organizational priorities.
