POSITION TITLE: DIRECTOR OF CLINICAL NURSING
REPORTS TO: ASSISTANT VP/SENIOR VP NURSING
MISSION STATEMENT:
The mission of the Nursing Department is to deliver comprehensive, compassionate, and quality patient care. The mission is consistent with the hospital’s mission, which is to deliver a wide variety of community oriented health services/programs.
SCOPE OF PRACTICE:
Responsible for planning, directing, managing and evaluating administrative and clinical services/activities of assigned patient care units. Assists in the formulation, implementation of philosophy, standards of care, and practices in the Department of Nursing.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Plans, develops and revises policies and procedures, objectives and standards of the Nursing Department.
2. Plans, manages and evaluates the quality and delivery of patient care in assigned units(s).
3. Appropriately allocates and schedules staff within available resources to carry out the responsibilities of the units as needed.
4. Implements standards of care and evaluates the effectiveness of patient care rendered.
5. Participates in responding to citations and onsite reviews from regulatory agencies.
6. Establishes departmental priorities in conjunction with the staff.
7. Acts and maintains liaison between nursing and other departments.
8. Demonstrates the ability to work with the staff in devising more efficient methods and systems, institutes changes in techniques and procedures, as necessary.
9. Monitors and adjusts clinical or administrative process flows in response to outcomes of or analysis of delivery of nursing care services.
10. Maintains department/unit expense budget within budget guidelines.
11. Participates in the development of management and staff members.
12. Maintains effective labor relations. Participates in counselling/ disciplinary actions as needed.
13. Demonstrates good organizational skills in the monitoring and implementation of department’s operational activities.
14. Demonstrates the ability to utilize all available resources in order to maximize patient care outcomes.
15. Maintains effective channels of communication inter and interdepartmentally to refine programs, problem resolution or identifying significant events.
16. Ensures that current job description exists for each staff position. Demonstrates a through knowledge of the job description and key requirements for each position in the department; encourages and monitors accountability for the responsibilities inherent in their positions at all times.
17. Monitors and maintains credentialing and competency of nursing staff.
18. Develops and maintains a system of records and reports that reflect the activities of assigned unit(s).
19. Plans and coordinates department based QI in collaboration with Managers and Interdisciplinary Team.
20. Monitors and evaluates supervisory staff in assigned unit(s).
21. Collaborates with Nursing Education to ensure that all personnel participates in educational activities as required to meet all regulations and maintain staffs competency.
22. Liaisons between admitting and nursing to facilitate movement of patients.
23. Conducts regular meetings with the managers to address/resolve problems and issues.
24. Interviews and participates in the hiring or termination process of nursing personnel.
25. Participates in hospital and nursing committee meetings.
26. Promote a safe, cooperative and professional health care environment to ensure optimum patient care (as per HR Policy 113c)
27. Adheres to all Hospital policies, procedures, rules and regulations, including but not limited to, absenteeism, ETIME, dress code, rules of conduct and cellular telephone usage.
28. Makes Customer Serviced a priority, treating customers (patients, visitors, and co- workers) in a professional manner exercising courtesy and tact. Effectively communicates with patients and others about St. Barnabas Hospital services in their area(s) of expertise or responsibility and ensures that concerns, questions or issues reach the right person(s) in St. Barnabas Hospital in a timely fashion.
29. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
A. Education Required: Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing.
Baccalaureate degree in Nursing required.
Master’s in Nursing or closely, related degree preferred.
B. License(s) Required: Licensed and currently registered as a professional nurse in New York State.
C. Experience/Skills: Five (5) + years of Management/Leadership experience required.
Seven (7) + of acute psychiatric nursing experience required.
Experience with Joint Commission, CMS, OASAS, and Justice Center preferred.
Experience working in Shared Governance Model with Magnet or PTE preferred.
Must be a team player, good communicator, and embrace change.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Thirty-seven and one half (37.5) per week with flexible hours.
