Job Description

Summary

WP Davis Excavation LLC is seeking a highly capable, field-driven Construction Superintendent to lead on-site execution for a long-term heavy civil and environmental restoration project in Whiting, Maine.

This is a full-time, on-site leadership role overseeing crews, subcontractors, safety, and environmental compliance. Due to the project’s distance from our home office, this role requires a superintendent who is self-sufficient, decisive, and comfortable solving problems independently in the field.

The Superintendent will play a key role in delivering the project safely, efficiently, and in accordance with plans, specifications, and regulatory requirements.

This position is intended for a true builder — someone who understands how the work is constructed because they have personally done it.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take full responsibility for day-to-day field operations on the project site

  • Lead from the field with a hands-on approach, not from a desk or trailer

  • Plan, sequence, and execute work with limited day-to-day input from the home office

  • Supervise and coordinate company crews and subcontractors

  • Direct work based on a strong understanding of construction means and methods, not just schedules

  • Enforce job site safety, including daily hazard analyses and toolbox talks

  • Ensure compliance with OSHA standards and environmental permit requirements

  • Coordinate dam restoration and fish passage construction, including excavation, cofferdams, dewatering, and concrete operations

  • Resolve constructability, sequencing, and means-and-methods challenges in real time

  • Train, correct, and guide crews during active work to ensure quality and safety

  • Coordinate schedules, material deliveries, equipment, and subcontractor activities

  • Maintain daily reports, production tracking, and required project documentation

  • Communicate clearly and effectively with project management, inspectors, engineers, subcontractors, and owners

This role requires hands-on field leadership grounded in personal experience building earthwork and concrete scopes.

Required Qualifications

General Superintendent Experience

  • 5+ years of experience as a superintendent or lead field supervisor on heavy civil projects

  • Proven ability to lead crews and subcontractors with limited day-to-day oversight

  • Strong understanding of construction sequencing, scheduling, and site logistics

Earthwork & Concrete Experience

  • Hands-on experience with excavation, grading, and site work operations

  • Experience overseeing heavy civil concrete work, including formwork, reinforcing, placement, and curing

  • Ability to identify constructability issues and direct corrective action in the field

Layout & Field Control (Critical)

  • Hands-on layout experience using total station and/or conventional methods

  • Ability to verify control, check line and grade, and troubleshoot layout issues independently

  • Strong ability to read and interpret plans, profiles, sections, and details

Certifications & Requirements

  • OSHA 10 certification required (OSHA 30 preferred or willingness to obtain)

  • Valid driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with dam rehabilitation, fish passage, marine, or environmental restoration projects

  • Familiarity with Maine DEP or environmental compliance requirements

  • CPR / First Aid certification

Physical & Work Requirements

  • Full-time, on-site presence in Whiting, ME

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions

  • Comfortable working around water, heavy equipment, and active construction sites

What We Offer

  • Competitive pay based on experience

  • Per diem provided for this project

  • Retirement plan (IRA) with employer matching contributions

  • Paid time off and holiday pay

  • Company vehicle or vehicle allowance (if applicable)

  • Stable, long-term project with potential for continued employment on future projects

  • Opportunity to lead a high-impact environmental restoration project with real community value
